FiiO E9: Line-Out vs Pre-Amp Out Quality

I have an E9 + E7 combo on the way. For the time being, its the only amp/DAC I own. I know the E7 does not have RCA L\R or SPDIF outs, just 2 x 3.5mm mini-jack outs. The E9 has both a 3.5mm mini-jack pre-amp out AND an RCA L\R out. If I were to purchase a tube amp in the future, is there a preferred way to connect it to my computer using the existing equipment, or should I purchase a USB DAC with RCA line-outs? I can't find any information on the difference between the pre-amp out and the RCA out (i.e. if one bypasses the amplifier) and also if using a 3.5mm mini-jack to RCA adapter to connect to the new amp will hurt the quality of the music.

Thanks!

Tim

Bump, I have the same question :) tlazarus, what tube amp did you have your eye on? Also, I'm wondering if I want to go solid state...I have an HD650, and it is already pretty warm, dark, and round, won't a tube amp just accentuate that even more? Perhaps I would rather brighten the highs and expand the sound stage...

Can anyone more experienced help us out?

I'm going to purchase a Little Dot 1+ because its a hybrid amp - the Denon D5000 supposedly work better with hybrid or solid state amps because of their low impedance. Hopefully someone with more experience is feeling generous!

The E9 is a solid state amp.

Thank you - I know :) What I don't know is the quality of the line out (RCA) on the E9, or the difference between the line-out rca's and the 3.5mm pre-amp out.

The 'Pre-Out' lets you gives you a variable (0-2v) signal that can is controlled by the volume knob.

The 'RCA line out' is a fixed signal (2v).

awesome - that is exactly what I was looking for. Will run the rca line-out to the tube amp then. Thanks!

Weighing in on HD650's vs. SS vs. tube amps:

HD650's are warm yes, so are tube amps...BUT the thing is a high impedence can like the HD650 or Beyer DT880 (600 ohm) requires lots of voltage, whereas lower impedences require much more current. Much of that HD650 veil/dark signature comes from them not getting the voltage they crave. Tube amps are much more capable of delivering the voltage necessary to drive the HD650 to its potential. I loved my HD650/Little Dot MKV (solid state) combo, and thought it couldn't get any better. THEN I got the Woo 3+ (tube) and realized what I'd been missing. The great thing about the HD650 is how well they scale with other equipment...sure, they sound great with a great sounding solid state amp, but they will absolutely destroy your expectations on a good tube amp. All the talk of them sounding dark or veiled or rolled off in the treble vanishes with proper amplification.

Yes, you want to strive for synergy, but don't get too caught up in the "tube amps are warm, SS isn't" thing...it's fairly subjective, and isn't really 100% accurate...if anything, that tubey warmth is more accurately described as "lush", "rich", or "sweet", compared to solid state's "fast", "crisp", "bright" or "detailed". Your source (medium, DAC, etc.) is going to have a great impact on that as well, so you need to look at your system as a whole, and what you want in the end...but no amount of trying to match "silver cables, because they are brighter than copper" to offset "a dark sounding headphone" can make up for poorly matched electrical demands.

Hope that helps...now, back on topic...sorry to threadjack.

That was really helpful!
