What's the deal with low volume on Sansa Clip+?

My 2nd gen iPod nano died and I got myself a clip+. Compared to nano and iPhone 4 I noticed clip+ doesn't drive my IEMs that well, even such sensitive ones as W3 and HJE900. It's not so much loudness (though I have to crank clip+ up closer to its limit) but this unmistakable faint "weakness" in the sound that cries "amp me!".

In menus I noticed that there's default Standard volume control and then Loud setting. I tried and it seemed to distort. So I was wondering how this gain is implemented and what it does.

EDIT: I googled and found that this could be overzealous EU hearing protection laws when Region is set to Europe. But I set my region to North America from the very beginning so this couldn’t be the cause of low volume.

Hi albau,

I found Rockboxing my Clip+ increased the volume a fair bit.

Thanks David, I was planning to rockbox it all along same as my departed nano. Just was curious what's wrong with standard firmware.

Make sure you dont have it set to EU volume limit.
