ipod touch is a better multimedia player wif lots of functions
Have you even listened to an X Series Walkman?

Sony SQ is among the best - easily superior to the iPod touch,...we ALL know that. Saying otherwise shoe's a lack of portable DAP experience.
If you buy a used X series, or any Sony for that matter, whats the situation regarding replacement batteries?

Well, that is just not accurate. I have a good friend, a HFer, who had both the Sony X1050 and the A847 (both have the same digital amp) and he recently moved to the Touch 4 and prefers it for SQ, or at least considers it equal. I have heard his X and I have an iPhone 4, which is the same as the Touch 4 basically on a SQ level, and I also prefer the Touch, especially with the option of using the EQu or Equalizer apps if needed.
If you are talking older Touches, maybe so. But not the latest Touch iteration. To say the Sony is "easily superior" means you might have heard the latest Touch.
I own the iPhone 4, I've owned the iPod touch 3G, and I've owned/own Sony mp3 players - and the Sony devices do sound better than the Apple products. Now, if you add in EQu or Equalizer (the apps) the SQ is now even - not better - w/the devices. Just like using a Rockboxed player being EQUAL to a Sony Walkman,...adding in a variable does change the equation. But, stock w/no other apps, the Sony is the superior sounding DAP - and I hope others will chime in here to add to this.
And, just to be fair now, a Cowon DAP also sounds better than an Apple player - and equal to a Sony as well - add in those apps and the iPhone/touch SQ is now even with them across the board. Any opinions here???
I know Sony players hiss with my custom and um3x. I think Sony's amp has high gain, which isn't bad for phones of higher sensitivity. The amp just has a lot of strength. That may also add colorations to the sound. I've noticed line out and headphone out doesn't have difference in sound. I'm wondering if it is missing a analog attenuator, and it's all done digital?
Now I'm getting very curious, precisely how does the Sony sound better that a Touch? Or do they just sound different and maybe it all comes down to subjective preferences of how we like to hear our music presented to us and that there's necessarily not an ultimate truth that one (Sony or Touch) is better than the other?

I doubt it.. sony MP3 players are a b1tch enough to use on PCs. Don't think any work on a mac without a work around method/program.
That and I HIGHLY doubt the supposed increase in SQ (which might not actually be there or very significant) will be in any way more valuable than the convenience and design of an iPod. Think about it realistically... you are talking one limited portable device vs another limited portable device. Convenience is my priority, storage space too.
Or like trying to choose between converse shoes or skater shoes when you really need cleats if you get me.
I would go with what is easiest to use and to me that is an iPod... I love iTunes to store and synch music. I use foobar2000 to play it.
SonicStage that sony used was a nightmare and an embarrassment.
SonicStage is a thing of the past. My NWZ-A816 works great with both PC and mac, as simple as using a thumb drive. More importantly, the walkman sounds better (more musical) than my ipod touch 4g (sounds thinner in comparison). They both serve their purpose, i.e. walkman for music, and ipod for podcasts/games/videos/etc.

I would agree with this. The Cowon players I have, and the four Rockboxed Sansas and three Sony players I've had/still have sound nicer than my Touch 4G without the Equalizer app....add in the app, and I rate them all equally enjoyable. (All comparisons made with headphone-out....no LODs here)
I also agree with this , I had an Ipod Touch (gave it to my wife, well she practically took it for her against my will :P) and i can say that the Sony X completely destroys the Touch in terms of sound quality , in fact the touch is amongt the worst players i have heard SQ wise........if i had to make a list of the best players i have owned it would be .
1.- Sony X walkman
2.- Sansa Clip
3.- Sony A818
4.- Zune HD
5.- Ipod Touch
6.- Archos 605

The newer Touch 4G is much better than the 2nd gen that you have.
In case that there is a significant sound difference (above 2.75-97%) between the DAP's in speculation then it should also be considered what IEM's that will be matched with the choice of DAP, because coloration, noise floor level etc. may play an important part how certain IEM's synergize with a Sony, Touch and some others.
i meant watching videos, surfing & gaming etc..no offence
