The D3 is really a great device if it is used exclusively for music. Its current state is definitely an improvement in contrast to when it was fresh off the Assembly line, but it still is disappointing the device can never live up to its potential. I think that is a good decision, I'm sure you will be happy with your J3.

If all a person wants is a Music player, then the C2 is a better value than the J3 yet with all the J3's benefits.

how long would you approximate a second gen d3 from cowon to come out? might head to the j3 though because I might get an iPhone soon... I also heard the sound quality from the d3 is better than the j3 along with more bass? is this true?

You can side load just a about any app onto the D3. I don't use either Spotify or Slacker to bother though. You can also easily add the Amazon AppStore app to the D3.

PowerAmp works.  I uninstalled it though as I prefer Google's Music Beta app.

I have a question regarding the infamous Cowon bass roll-off:

 

Can the roll-off be fixed with EQing, or is it an intrinsic problem that will simply always be there with low impedance headphones no matter what the EQ is set at?

My main DAP is the Cowon D2 which suffers from bass rolloff. The easiest fix for it is using headphones with higher impedance or adding an impedance adapter (cheap on ebay).

I'm not sure how bad it is on the more recent Cowons or if they suffer from it at all.

I forget what the recommended impedance is offhand. Just do a forum search.

Thanks for your input RAQ.  I guess it is an instrinsic issue then where EQing does not fix it...

 

I'm assuming you have EQed before and the bass roll-off is still present?

It is not noticeable with 32 ohm phones, if that helps you any.

4D - would you mind sharing tips on how you got Music Beta to work on your D3? I'm running the US version of Gingerbread, device is not rooted,  and I sideloaded the 3.0 apk of Music Beta, from a  source I don't currently recall. I cannot access my Google account from it (therefore streaming is not even an option), and although the music I have loaded onto my device shows on the library when I open up Music Beta, none of it will play and Music closes down after about 5 seconds once I try to get it to play.

I don't know "How" I got it to work.  It just works.   No, it doesn't stream my cloud music, but does play the music I installed on the D3. I had to use a file browser to find and tap on one of the songs, then select the Music Beta app to play it.  After that the Music beta app found all my music and was (is) able to play it. I'm hoping they'll update it to stream on the D3.  Serious flaw. 

 

On another topic, the Cowon J3 was updated today. Look for that thread.
