Sony STR-DB940 receiver with a Sony full sized CD Player circa 1989

Would this enhance the sound quality of a CD I would play in the same way a DAC would?

Here are the specs for the STR-DB940 AV Receiver:

  • Sound Output Mode AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
  • Built-in Decoders DTS decoder , Dolby Digital , Dolby Pro Logic
  • Sound Effects Bass Boost
  • Digital Sound Processor (DSP) Yes
  • Surround System Class 5.1 channel
  • Output Power / Total 550.0 Watt
  • Total Harmonic Distortion 0.09 %
  • Amplifier Output Details 110.0 Watt - 8.0 Ohm - THD 0.09 % - 1.0 channel(s) ( Rear ) , 110.0 Watt - 8.0 Ohm - THD 0.09 % - 2.0 channel(s) ( Front ) , 110.0 Watt - 8.0 Ohm - THD 0.09 % - 2.0 channel(s) ( Center )

Let me know what you think.

Anyone have any ideas, please?

I haven't listened to either and the stats tell you very little. But I'd hook it up and try it. I would expect it to sound good.

Would it work? Yes. I presume you mean your using the receiver as a DAC to a set of speakers? If you're asking whether it'd be better than a standalone dac then it totally depends on which dac you mean and what use you're putting it to. It's a bit of a waste of a good receiver if it's used solely as a dac and I don't know how good the dac circuit would be. One problem might arise though, does your cd player have a digital output??

Its an old A/V receiver for home theater that plays CD/DVD/LD. DACs have improved significantly since the late '80s.

Hook it up and listen.

Since it has a SPDIF out, you can also use it as a CD transport to an external DAC.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Let me elaborate on my question:

Instead of using an 80s CD Player which does not have a digital output, what if I used a DVD player to play the CDs?

Don't most A/V Home Theatre systems have a DAC built in, this one is from the 2000s?

And I would be using this for headphones.

that would work :)

Sorry, for some reason I thought it was that old when I googled it.

All digital A/Vs have a built-in DAC. All DVD players can also play CDs. If it has a headphone out, yes.

If not then you have to use an external headphone amp.
