Recabling old headphones

Thread Starter

Hey guys, I know there are TONS of topics on recabling, and yes, I've looked at nearly all of them.  But could someone give me a few sites on where to buy some cheap but good cables?  My AKG K81DJs came in yesterday and they sound amazing (I can't believe I thought Skullcandys were "high end")  but the cable is way too long, and I saw a few threads on some mods which I want to try out, but before I do any kind of testing, I plan on doing some Frankenstein work on some cheaper, older headphones I don't use anymore kind of as a test run.  Any help would be appreciated.

Edit:  Also, any tools I might need to buy also,  I have a soldering iron already.

Redco audio is the place to get all of your recabling needs, www.redco.com

Very reasonable prices and great customer service.

I've had really good experiences with redco also.

For mogami quad cable, Redco or Markertek. For bare wire (DIY braid), navships on ebay or homegrown audio.

I've been having great experiences with Canare L-2B2AT microphone cable for my recabling.  It is a lot lighter and more flexible than star quad, the wires are really easy to strip, work with, and solder, it isn't too microphonic, and it's reasonably cheap.

Shrink tubing really is worth it too.  I tried to do a few recables without it, and it's useful in all kinds of situations.

Do a search for some of my guides, I have an AKG k518/81 guide you may find helpful. The screws are located underneath the earpads (there are three per side). I also have some posts in the DIY cable gallery you may find helpful.
