USB Interconnect cable?

Guys I have an assortment of USB interconnect cables that came with various devices.  Some have a cylindrical thing on one end of the cable, some have a cylindrical thing on both ends of the cable (Fiio E7 cable) and some cables have no cylindrical thingies on either end.

Can anyone tell me what these cylinders are and what they do? Can the cables be used interchangeably?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Thanks Jerry, I read the article you provided.  It sounds like the more bumps, the better.  It also seems to follow that the cables can be used interchangeably.  Do you agree?

It says in the offical usb spec, not to use ferrite beads on usb cables i only use ferrite clamps on power cables , you can buy shielded usb cables which block out EMI/RF.

my mouse (steelseries xai & sidewinder x5), keyboard (cherry 80-3000), both monitor leads and digital camera lead all have ferrites!  i think it's to help stop them/the cables acting as transmitters for the high frequency crap inside the pc.
