What amp to buy for AKG K701??

Hey!

I'm new around here, never thought I'd need an amp or advice on this, but I'm truly lost.

I brought a pair of AKG K701 headphones cause I love my music and I love it loud! =P

I stay up late and run a professional PS3 team, which requires a very high quality headphone to gain a tiny advantage.

Sadly, my sound-card on PC sucks and my amp on my sound system can't seem to project surround sound properly, or pump enough juice to give me loud LOUD sound.

I'm wondering if anybody could help educate me on these stand alone, headphone specific amps, and which one would be best for my needs? Price wise I don't really want to blast over $400...

Please help =]

Do a search, there's a ton of info on this. I had great luck with a wooaudio 6, a bit above your price point, you might be able to pick up a used one for about 500$, people seem to like the heed canamp with 701/702...you going to need an amp that produces lots of current, it's a hard to drive headphone.

I would recommend Matrix M-stage with Class A Biasing Mod OPA627AU. It drives K701 quite well.

K701 is a hard to drive headphone. You have to save more and buy either Nuforce Icon HDP or the Burson HA160. biggrin.gif

I just found that by pulling the jumpers in my LD1+ switching it to high gain, it pushes my 701's quite well.

Thanks for the advice! =D

I'm not too confident in modding, so I'll leave the Matrix M-Stage out of this =P

I'm tossing up over the NuFforce Icon HDP and the Burson HA 160.

I don't like the canamp with the zero wiring/printed circuitry, and the Woo Audio A6 is a bit odd looking =P haha.

I can get the Nuforce for ~ $530 shipped; or the HA 160 for ~$600 Shipped.

Which is the better option?

P.S. I've read some reviews regarding the 24 stepped attenuator for the HA 160. I'm not somebody who tries to pick apart music, so from this stand point I don't think it would affect me, but I do enjoy loud, would the 24th rotation be... loud? LOL, I know it sounds stupid, but I'd hate to spend this much money on an amp only to have it be loud.. but not quite loud enough?

You ever plugged anything into a wall outlet before?

Then you can 'mod' an m-stage. wink.gif

I prefer the Nuforce.

Hey, thanks for all the help, I've decided to go with the Nuforce as it seems to be the most straight forward one =P

Thanks again! =]

I'm really glad to hear that as I've got an LD 1+ on the way (damn chinese new year is killing my patience) as well as some sylvania gold brand with gold pins and the opa2107 opamp. I ordered all this originally to power my R2Si phones but then for some reason impulse bought a set of K702's.

I really need to stop buying stuff. I really just wanted the k701's because my gateway into head-fi was picking up a pair of K271 MKII' s.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd just update here =]

Does anyone know of anything similar to this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ONKYO-iPod-Dock-ND-S1-Digital-Media-Transport-/150559259959?pt=Other_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item230e07fd37

Just wanted to look at the options =]
