Sorry to hear that.  Was it sold/shipped through Amazon?

No I bought them from b&h. The I paid the same price that amazon was asking, $70. I sent them back for exchange. I really like the build quality on them. I hope my next set works perfectly.

I seem to be having the same problem. Purchased mine from Amazon and received them about a week ago. Trying to decide if I should return/exchange them. When the end of the cable or connector is moved or touched, sound distorts, gets fuzzy and goes in and out. I also noticed the heat shrink tub that goes around the cable at the end is open, doesn't seem to be put on properly. Does anyone else have this problem?

Sounds like Sony turned out some defective MDR V6's.

Very surprising - with what anyone says about the sound quality of their less expensive phones,

their QC is generally superb across the product line..

(One of the reasons for their enduring popularity among music professionals.)

If I received a pair of those headphones, I'd return them promptly.

Are you using it out of an iPhone or iPod touch? I think there's a recent thread on this. My V6 does the same thing on my touch. Haven't gotten around to plugging it into something else.

Maybe the connector is NOT sitting on the iThing securely?  Is there a case on the iThing?  Try the headphones on a stereo and see if has the same issue.

Let me just first say, I have used both Sennheiser HD 25-1 II, and Panasonic RP-HTX7 headphones without having this problem.

I don't have a iphone or ipod, but I just tried them on my HTC Evo 4G and Zune player. Guess what... they work fine!

Now I'm even more confused as to what the problem could be. I took some picture of the cable at the end where the heat shrink tubing appears to not be shrunk all the way. When I tried heating it up, the tubing will not shrink.

Does anyone else's cable on Sony MDR-V6 headphones look like this?

I left mine at the office, so i'll post a pic Monday, but from memory mine look a lot like that.

EDIT: spelling.

Thanks, would be much appreciated.

Just seemed a little odd to me that it was loose the way it is. There seems to be the same exact heat shrink tube on the other end of the cable (below the left ear) which is around the cable very tightly.

Sorry for the crappy cell-phone quality, but I think you'll "get the picture."

You're headphone cable looks the same as mine.

I'm beginning to think perhaps there is nothing wrong with my headphones. They work just fine with my Zune and HTC EVO. The problem seems to only occur when connected to my Dell (sound bar) monitor speakers. Maybe the static is happening because the entire plug is metal, my other headphones have plastic plugs. I will just need to avoid touching/moving the cable and plug. Other wise, I really like these headphones, they sound amazing!

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Sony will never kill the V6 because it's pretty much the standard used in the studio world. I actually gave away my V6 to my school as a "donation" as they needed to buy a few for misc purposes.
Also, the reason I believe it's not on the JP site is due to the the MDR-CD900ST, which is the standard in Japan. I believe the CD900ST is of superior quality to the V6's.

The 7506 supercedes the V6 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_MDR-V6

It might be possible that Sony realized they don't need both the V6 and 7506, and so they might just sell the 7506. I noticed that recently the price difference between the two has narrowed. For years people said they are the same except for the gold plated plug on the 7506 and longer warranty. The V6 Wiki says that the 7506 has a slightly stronger magnet(neodymium vs samarium cobalt).

Which are the main competators to the V6/7506? Are they the Sennheiser HD280 pro and Shure SR440?
