What is a digital timer? What are they used for?

I am looking into buying this set of vintage audio equipment and part of the set is a digital timer.

 

I am a bit bewildered about what exactly a digital timer is..

Other than a timer.. that is digital..

 

What exactly are these used for.

As far as I know it is like an alarm clock for your stereo. I had one that came with a vintage early 80s sansui set. The timer was just there to power on and off your stereo at pre-programmed times. A normal timer, that's all it is. Digital because of the nice red or blue digits, I guess.

They were also used for timer activated recordings off of the radio.
