Headphone amp for 600 ohm akg headphones - Page 6

hey scottie. i got a question. do you think any local stores might carry any xlr adapters? i tried radioshack but had nothing i was looking for. only option i have left is ripping my akg's apart and solder speaker wire to the drivers i did like my other 2 headphones but then again they would never be usable around my house unless i had speaker amps everywhere. any suggestion what would be the best option? also i notice lot of these old receivers and amps have balance connectors(XLR) in the back so i was thinking probably instead get a female mini xlr to male xlr and plug it in the back.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Rex dude they don call it ratshack fo nuffin! LOL. go to a reall EE store nearby (phonebook, directory assist or just ask Unc Google) & they should have it as XLR connector are very common items. at worst buy it online & its cheaper to boot.

don frag around with wires this wires that. 1st off make yoself a 4pin XLR female to speaker pin pigtail adapter much like "da wetcoast scottie snake" LOL. then all yous gotta do is just reterminate (doncha lov tat word??) any headphone in a 4pin male XLR & ya done! wiring schematics are easily gotton online too. also make a 4pin XLR female to 1/4" TRS & u've got all options covered. good thing is its all in balanced too so incase u ever get yoself a balanced amp - ya ready to boogie!

reterminate? you mean by re-doing the connector on my akg's? also i was talking about this when mentioned some of these old receivers have a balanced connector on the back for mics and other audio equipment.

not my pic but same model somewhat(mines the 5000x version) you'll see the tape/rec connector in the back next to the rca inputs/outputs but to me it looks like it'll be a 5-pin xlr connector. will a 4-pin xlr fit in that? was an idea when i saw it cause balance connectors are basically xlr connectors(specifically 4-pin xlrs). wonder if you ever tried this? i know one of your amps have to have a balance connector in the back like mine or maybe 2. have you ever checked?

nevermind...i'm dumb. i know what you mean. i'm still curious tho about the back of my sansui amp it's input if that'll work as well.

Those old tape connectors are actually din connectors and not xlr connectors although they look very similar. Afaik they are not compatible.

sorry Rex my bad. thought u were talkin bout somthing else. i've got no idea about them DIN jacks cept they be the funny things europeans use. i imagine its for a serious pro tape/R2R recorder deck of those days with record, playback & monitor functions into 1 jack & i betcha its all controllable from the tape deck itself. thats bout the extent of my knowledge bout them as though im old, im not old enuff to have muck round with tape recorder decks!

try froogle but i can imagine running into a wall there too. LOL goodluck!

no prob. i was clueless about that connector till i found out it was a din connector. not xlr. well i'm back to original plans for my akgs once i get a 4-pin xlr male connector and figure how i'm gonna mod that in there to replace the mini 3-pin male connector so i can make my own 4-pin xlr to speakerwire connector. i'm just gonna use straight wire ends. i never for some reason like banana connectors.

 Hi folks

I also forget to tell you guys that this amp is the version with 2 trimpots for bias adjustments, i adjusted the bias from around 15ish ma to around 20ma on each one and now the mids and highs sound clearer now

This was a pain in the arse to do as there was drifting before the readings settled and when i adjusted one pot it would knock the other

one out slightly then i would have to wait for it to settle angry_face.gif before putting the fuses back in (turn amp of first though)

It would be a good idea to find out the bias figueres of your sansui amp and if your confident then adjust biases to sansui specs for better sound.beerchug.gif

i hear ya Paddy. been searching online for service manuals on my vintage amps but some of them are hard to read & decipher. guess i have to try harder. for sure proper factory specs make a whack of difference. goodjob bud

I think the more powerfull one like yours scottie will probably have a higher bias current, but dont take my word for it (try AK for info)

After adjusting the trimpot each time i had to wait for about 2 minutes to let it stabalise, this took about half an hour to do before settling

on the final result

After adjusting one always check the other as i found the other one went out after adjusting the other plus these trimpots are getting

on a bit now and probably not as stable, acording to my service sheet these are 200 ohm vr,s

A good replacement cap is the elna silmic 2 electrolytic, these are supposed to be the optimum for the sansui,s and will be getting 4 of

these for mine (2x 35v/1000uf and 2x 50v/1000uf) these are output caps and reservoir caps, i will have to use 2x50v/1000uf for the

reservoir as the original is a 3 legged 50v/1000uf cap

I found a place in canada that is cheap (cheaper than uk)

Well

I think i am going to replace every electrolytic in this amp very_evil_smiley.gif for the hell of it as these caps must be on there last breath

Here is a schematic for the au101, i might scan the whole service/instruction manual if anyone needs it.

Yup

I ordered all 34 electrolytics for this baby (elna silmic 2), so when they get here from canada i will put them in atsmile.gif

Well i replaced all the caps with elna silmic 2,s

Give it 4 weeks turned on 24/7 to burn in and all i can say it sounds well better than it did

The harshness in the sound has been reduced by 90% (must of been the caps) and has lost about  50% of the warmth in the sound

This has made for a cleaner clearer sound and sounds great on my array of headphones

I would recomend this to anyone with old sansui amps or any vintage gear

I replaced 34 electrolytic caps (same voltage/capacitance values) replaced the 2 x 330ohm resisters on the headphone socket for

2 hand matched shinkoh 120 ohm tantalum resisters, cleaned all connections with caig deoxit

You can get all the parts from parts connection in canada for a good price

Will be replacing the headphone socket soon for a better one
