Need advice on portable music player for my dre studio headphones - complete novice on the subject!!

Thread Starter

I looked through the portable music player forums but I'm such a novice on the subject I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for.  I was recently gifted a pair of the Dr. Dre studio headphones and I'd like to find a portable music player to use these with.  My budget is around $300 and I'd like to find the best quality sound that I can for that amount of money.  I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions.  Thank you!!!

Hello Grasshopper and welcome.

I have three MP3 players:

Fourth generation IPod Touch

HiFiMan HM 801 and

Cowon D2+.

The HFiMan 801 was the most expensive of the three by far.  The user interface stinks, I mean it really is terrible.  The sound quality is excellent IMO and it supports SDHC cards.

The IPod Touch was my first player.  I chose it because it is so well supported by after-market manufacturers.  You'll never lack for a case, dock, apps, etc.  The sound quality is okay.  Iy has an excellent user interface, probable the best available. It will not accept SD cards.  It has flash memory only.  I have the 32GB model and it was about $300 USD.

My favorite is the Cowon.  It's sound quality is as good as that of the HM 801, has an okay user interface aacceptes SDHC cards and has all kinds of sound equalization features built in.  My little D2+ has plenty of horsepower to drive Senn HD 600 phones with no need for additional amplification.

Good luck with your choice.

Bill

If I were you, I'd look at the Cowon J3

I vote J3, Cowon probably has the best sounding players that have a good interface. However, I wouldn't recommend a D2 here. Those headphones have a lot of bass, and I hear that the D2 rolls off quite a bit of bass, to the point of being annoying to some.
