Just a quick question... Ordered my e9 a couple of minutes ago and I just realized something. I know that a usb cable is included in the packaging, is that how you connect the amp directly to the laptop (without the e7)? Or do I need to buy a separate cable? Thanks

The e7 contains the actual dac, the e9 alone is just an amp not a dac, the only way to connect the e9 to a laptop without the e7 is to use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack cable from the laptops headphone/line out to the e9's line in.
Can some one please explain to me what the e7 does when combined with the e9? I just bought the e9 and I'm using the standard 3.5 mm cable for the connection. I would like to use a diferent cable with better sound qaulity. Any suggestions?

e7 is a Digital-Analog Converter/amp. With it plugged in through your USB, you could think of it as a portable sound card; since it bypasses the laptop's DAC(really good option if your laptop 3.5mm jack suffers from line noise, or crappy output in general)
the e9 is strictly an amp, which helps with driving high resistance headphones like the AKG 701 or Sennheiser HD650, or making IEM's REALLY loud(You can easily destroy a pair if you overdrive them). Pair both of them up, and you have a pretty darn good portable setup
