I have a pair of HD 595's and im trying to watch some movies my friend gave me in surround sound. The audio is encoded in AC3 so im assuming its 5.1 channels from the dvd he ripped it from. He has converted them to mkv format.

I have tried converting the mkv files to another file type so I can play them on my xbox and use my astro mixamp to convert the dobly digital 5.1 to 5.1 virtual headphone but it seems very complicated.

I am wonder if there is a program that can be downloaded on my computer that will convert the AC3 audio from the file im playing to virtual 5.1 for my headphones?

I have also thought about buying a USB sound card but im not sure which ones are good. The X-Fi looks like a good bet and it has something called CMSS-3D which converts 5.1 streams to virtual headphone.

Any suggestions would be great - Thanks!
