Best Rock/Female Vocals Closed Cans - Page 3

B&H has HFI-580s, K271s, D7000s, M50s out of the phones you have listed here.

PRO900s are phenoms.  Kees' mod and they have been compared to ED8's

Now I'm confused... What happened to the other recommendations? You're now jumping to the AKG K271, which when I owned at the time was very difficult to amplify. I'm almost positive it was even more difficult than the K701. I had an Ibasso D10 portable amp at the time, and I had to bring it in high gain and had to raise the preamp on top of maximizing the volume. The K701 also has better bass extension and response than the K271.

You also asked for a rock headphone. K271 is not good with rock unless the kicks from the bass drum and hits from tom toms don't matter to you. It will sound sterile though. Also, the way the K271 clamps is still a bit tight.

The K271 is a very detailed headphone for the price however.

For your needs, I don't see much headphones doing better than the W1000X. I thought the ED 8s were very detailed but at the $1500 price, that's all top-tier competition and the ED 8 doesn't really get that far IMO. I also preferred many other headphones for vocals.

I am really disappointed because I really love the way they sound. I am going to give them a week to see if they ease up, but I'm not holding out too much hope. I think I may need to go the AKG K271 MkII route. I'm pretty sure those will be comfortable as they look to be circumaural and have a similar headband to the 702s, which are quite comfortable to me. I know I'll lose some of the bass in the process, but what good is superior bass if I can't leave the cans on long enough to enjoy it. Like I said, I'll give them a week. If anyone has any suggestions to alter the comfort level or another set I should try besides the AKGs, suggest away. I think I'd have the same issue with the Shures as they seem to be similar in style. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance

The Edition 8 are circumaural!  Small-ish, but they are circumarual.  Do they not fit over your ears?

Boy, do I feel silly! Apparently, the first couple of times I put the Edition 8s on, I must have been doing something wrong because now I can get them to fit comfortably. It is a tight fit, but my ears definitely fit in the cups. I am so relieved that I don't have to send them back because love the way they sound. They are also (relatively)small so I don't look like a tool wearing them on the subway. I did, however, get a pair of K271mkIIs to try out. Townyj, if you've ever heard the 701/702 and like the sound, you'll most likely like the 271s as well. I think, for the money, they are pretty sweet. Isolation is not great, however. B&H has them a lot cheaper than they are advertising. The Ed8s are definitely a step up, but be aware that the bass is more apparent with these compared to the 701/702/271. Also, the price is quite a bit more. For me, they are worth it because I plan to use them every day on the subway as well as home for now. They are versatile enough to be both for me right now. Later down the line I plan to get an open set just for home, maybe LCD-2 or something, for when I get a desktop amp/dac. Wind, I never did get a chance to try the W1000x. Couldn't find anyone who carried them and to import would have been crazy, especially if I didn't like them. Anyway, I have learned to give things a bit more than 2 days to judge and especially, to post on here. I will be back soon to pick your brains about a good amp/dac combo to pair with my Ed8, mac mini and possibly LCD-2. That is for another day as right now I am happy with my TTVJ slimatsmile.gif

I'd just like to thank Skylab for recommending the Edition 8s. I love these things. They are great with every kind of music I listen to. I just got a D100 for my home setup and the Edition 8s indeed scale well, as someone told me they would.
