Open headphones with speakers in the backgroud

So...  I tried something last night that I *really* liked!

I listened to open headphones, but left the speakers on in the backgrond.

To me, it was strictly better than using headphones alone (I would *feel* my sub) or speakers alone (better *clarity*).  The sound was at the same time more full and clear.

Has anyone else tried it?  Have you felt the same?

(I realize this may depend on the set-up.  I think both my speakers and headphones are mid-fi's, more or less in the same league.  In anyone is curious:  Sony Google TV -> Nuforce Icon HDP -> Shanling PH3000 -> AKG 501 for the 'phones. Sony Google TV -> Nuforce Icon HDP -> Shanling PH3000 -> Outlaw RR2150 -> Polk LSi9 + Polk DSW 2000 for the speakers).

C'mon, people.  Has no one ever tried this?

I think that's a cool idea. You'd "feel" the music as you would with speakers (making it more natural) and then you'd get the imaging from the headphones.

i think open headphones with a subwoofer would be pretty neat.

AFAIK lots of head-fiers do it. Best of both worlds and all that, if you can manage the logistics.

That's exactly what I felt:  "best of both worlds!"

A few have run the AKG K-1000 with a subwoofer and reported great results. I haven't tried it yet (I don't have a sub), but it's something I'd like to try. If you run a few searches, you should find a few threads dealing with it.
