FLAC in Portable MPs?

I got all excited long ago what i upgraded my Sandisk Clip firmware [rockbox] to play .flac files

It is a nice 1GB-capacity which i havent found a suitable replacement yet... [im saving up for a HM601]

so i loaded up flac files played them through a Cmoy amp then a Grado SR80i.

so the thing is i dont find it convenient [?] to play flac files with PMPs...

maybe primarily because i dont have enough storage space? if i get a bigger space i might just shrug it off.

another is the limitations imposed b y the clip's DAC. lets face it my acer laptop soundcard sounds better.

i can only distinguish a level 5 flac vs a 320kbps mp3 on A/B, and though the clip, they sound all the same.

and i think most of the mid-tier PMPs also cannot bring the best of flac files...

is there a some sort of "suggestive" effect knowing that youre playing flac files?

in the far future ill be purchasing a HM601 because it supports SD, has a decent DAC, and a highpower battery to power power-hungry cans. i also hope it will let saving flac files in pMPs justifiable.

Get an Android phone/device. There are plenty of apps that can play FLAC.

For cheap:

Clip+ 8gb with 32gb card for $130

Best choice:

Cowon S9 32gb for $210 because of price, features, and flac. You can customize the ui to look like the J3, I have it, love it

Top choice:

J3, because it's the s9 with expansion and a better design

My S9 pushes and plays extremely well with my Grados. It doesn't need an amp unless your headphones need one, for grados, not at all.

The Hifiman is for the person who likes to pander with their pmps, and thinks the total placebo effect is true. Meaning, they think that the best audio can overcome great audio by removing small hear noises. To my S9, I hear no difference, using different headphones and amps.

I highly say that the J3 32gb with 32gb card would be best.

Mr BotByte, i tend to stay away from fancy players. hmmm... do these players have decent DACs enough to play the most, if not all, of flac qualities?

If you think your laptop sound card sounds better playing flacs than a Sansa, you must have an awesome laptop....lol.

yes i actually think so, its an acer something... vs. my clip v1.

though it maybe because the ambiances where i use my clip.

"Fancy" isn't a term I would use to describe Cowon. More like "useable"

I see Hifiman as a Clip+ with a BIG promise and a good amp. What probably make the placebo effect. I believe that if it's the same audio coming out through great components, it should sound the same. IDK, it might make a difference.

The J3/S9 has the right twist of Great audio, Great EQ (which makes a HUGE difference), great video (which I don't use) and other nice features. There are not many other players that have a lot going for them in every department that can excel in audio quality also.

thanks man, and thats maybe one thing why i use the word fancy... you know, touch screens, video. i may not want to pay for those features.

cowon seems to be, yeah, a company that has better audio from the rest of the consumer electronics. havent heard but a hundred people cant be wrong, i guess.

im eyeing the clip+ now as it kinda satisfies my "minimalist" taste.

ive looked at cowons for a similar "rugged" [no big screen etc] player... seems there are plenty? which one would you recommend?
