Mine gets worse with the jaw clenching for sure. I've heard that salicylates can make it worse, and I wonder if the sulfasalizine that I take for my chronic tendonitis is exacerbating things.
My neurologist says my ringing which seems to come and go and also increases with jaw clenching is most likely due to air pressure in the inner ear. For a while it was really driving me mad. I couldn't sleep or read in a quiet room. I couldn't seem to take my mind off it either. Then he prescribed paroxetine ER 12.5 MG once a day which I took for about 4 months and I was able to turn my attention away from it. I also inject Rebif for MS which is an interferon. I thought that might be causing the ringing and stopped for a few months and the ringing did decrease considerably. I try not to take advils or any salicylates. Recently I had a root canal done and had to take Advils for about four days. The ringing which seemed to be mostly gone before really ramped upward. The Advils really increased the ringing. Now it's been about 3 weeks since I've taken any for the root canal and the ringing is way down to a level I barely ever notice. Feb 1st I'll start the Rebif again and we'll se if it increases the ringing.
I'm also on paroxetine 10mg a day for my hyper somnolence due to sleep apnea and possible narcolepsy (nuvigil too), and it helps me not focus on the tinnitus but I can hear it anytime I direct my attention to it. I had an MRI to make sure I didn't have an acoustic neuroma, and that was negative. My tympanometry was normal, but my hearing test shows roll-off in the high frequencies of both ears. My problem with hearing testing is that I can't hear the higher test tones above the ringing in my ears, which seems to be a constant 10-12Khz tone in the right ear > left. The ENT thinks my ear damage was due to the vancomycin antibiotic that I needed for MRSA that I caught while on a ventilator in the hospital in 2001.
