While going through the RE-252 appreciation thread, I saw kostalex post a few pictures of the RE-252 KM that his friend created for him. After seeing them again in better detail in another thread (http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/468941/re252-takes-the-best-from-er-4s-and-re0/15#post_6467315) I decided to mod my RE-252. Instead of taking pictures of each step in the process and posting them up, I have decided to shoot a video of each step and upload it. I'd like to thank clieos for the in-depth review which inspired me to get the RE-252 in the first place, pianist for giving me the small Ultimate Ears tips that provide an excellent, comfortable seal and kostalex for the RE-252 KM which inspired me to create the RE-252 SEM.
This post from my blog further explains the project:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)I really like the RE-252 from HifiMAN. They are very refined and are the most neutral IEMs I have ever heard despite a bit of coloration in the midrange. The soundstage is very wide and the separation of the individual instruments is astounding. They truly make me feel like I’m actually at a live performance.
The only thing that I have disliked about RE-252 is the fit due to the mostly rubber housing. So I have decided to mod them. Taking inspiration from kostalex on the Head-Fi forums, I’ll be re-shelling them using the housings from another cheaper pair of IEMs. I decided to use the Sony MDR-EX35LP as my donor as it appears that the half of the shell that I need for the RE-252 can be easily removed from them. They were also quite inexpensive at $16.94 CAD including taxes meaning that I had more money to spend on the tools I needed to do the mod.
After a good search, I came across many tutorials on head-fi pertaining to recabling headphones and none regarding recabling IEMs (using dynamic transducer technology). Upon seeing this, I decided that it would be best if I not only created a tutorial from such a unique recable but to turn it into a video series as well. I will be uploading these videos to YouTube and then posting their embedded equivalents in subsequent posts on this blog and this thread on head-fi.
For shooting the videos, I’ll be using the my only phone, the Motorola Milestone to record them. While the video quality isn’t as good nor the resolution as high as the Xperia X10 I used to own, the feedback from friends who have watched the sample video I uploaded was quite positive.
I’m sure you all will find these videos as informative and fun to watch as I found it to create them.
Lesson #1: The Tools
This lesson serves as an introduction to the series and covers the tools that you will need to finish the mod.
I hope you all enjoy the videos.
