Review Decware Taboo. An Amazing Achievment - Page 6

Just call Decware and ask.  They're pretty easy to get on the phone.  Email, not so much.

By "it," what do you mean SA? I am running new Genalex Gold Lions in the Taboo. But based on Frank's rec, I ordered two platinum-graded, cryo-treated Mullard 12AT7 tubes from Upscale. I plan to use one in the Taboo and one in the ZSTAGE when it arrives.

I wish I could figure out if the Mullard GZ37 will work.

I have not used anything but Sylvania 5U4G in my amps. I have 5Y3G and 5Y3GT but I have used the 5U4G not sure that that recrtifier Mullard will work give Steve a holler and he will tell you yes or no.

I did exactly that. The rectifier I have in now is an NOS Winged C. It is very nice, but I suspect the Mullard, if it will work, could also be quite nice.

Steve advised me today that he hasn't tried the Mullard GZ37 in the Taboo, but in theory, it should work. So, I am going to give it a shot.

Anyone try the Mullard EL84 reissues? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger unless I can find a good deal on a NOS..It's day 4 and I'm lovin' my Taboo. It's pretty much everything I expected it to be. happy_face1.gif

Regarding preamp, I think solid-state to tube is alright, but tube to tube definitely sound better if you're using speakers. Currently rollin' a Tung-Sol 12AX7 Gold Pin. It's got a nice airy midrange and extended highs, very good for rock as well for vocals.

SA, have not tried the Mullard reissues. I may be misremembering, but I believe those would not activate the Hazen Grid on your Taboo. Let us know what they sound like if you decide to try them. I put a NOS Mullard 12AT7 in yesterday. Picked up two platinum graded and cryo'ed from Upscale Audio, the place Frank recommended. I now ditto that recommendation. Excellent and knowledgeable service. The 12AT7 is one liquid sweet tube.

Glad you like the 12AT7 now you need to find some EL84 Sylvania blackplate or NOsS Mullard EL84 or 7189 for a real treat. You are correct that the Hazen Mod does not activate but man the Taboo sounds great with either of those tubes above. I would not buy the reissue mullard. I tried the reissue EL84$ Genelex and sold them. I am all Mullard right now except for rectifier The Hazen mod is limited to SV83 types only and the EL84 is a great tube

I have the Sylvania black plate, and it is a close call. What Steve has done with the Hazen Grid is pretty impressive, considering the sound coming out of those SV83s. I have the Mullard GZ37 Rectifier on the way. Should be here next week. Looking forward to trying it.

I haven't tried the Genalex EL84, but I like the reissue Genalex 12AU7 and 12AX7. I will probably keep them in the cupboard, but they are no contest with the NOS Mullard T.

I take back what I said earlier, it sounds fantastic with my Magnum Grado's as well; super detailed, spacious, tight, and dynamic. I think I just had a gain/sensitivity issue earlier. Only problem is when I connect my Magnum to the Taboo I get this pretty loud hum I haven't really noticed before and I can't seem to get rid of. I have everything connected to the same power strip currently: amp, computer and source. Tried isolating the amps power directly to the wall socket and turning everything off including lamps, cable box, TV, router, etc.

edit: it might have been the tube. I was using a Sovtek 12AX7LPS, switched back to the Tung Sol. still hear the hum but it's a lot more faint.

I'm actually quite amazed how good it sounds with regular plain jane tubes. I can easily pick out the tubes different characteristics. I don't know what happened, but the amp is really starting to open up today. Great slam, powerful and punchy bass. I have the Mapletree out of the mix right now and it sounds amazing without it. Sounds rich, full, and enveloping. bigsmile_face.gif

Listening to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Facing Future his voice fills the room with such power and warmth. The midrange is just amazing. I didn't realize my speakers were that capable. I think I'm starting to hear the effects of lucid mode.

Nice write up Frank!

Greetings,

I plan to power my LCD 2 with Decware Taboo, based on the reviews that I've read in this forum. My DAC (audio-gd DAC 19DF) has an output level of 2.5v. Do I need a pre-amp or can I hook it up directly to Taboo. Tks.

I tried mine with the taboo and CD player and it worked. The CD players are 2.2 I would check with Steve Deckert before buying. You may be limited to using the 12AX7 which is higher gain for the Taboo. Steve will let you know. The preamp makes mine sound more dynamic.
