Dammit, Tangent!

As if my pockets weren't empty enough from this PPA project I'm starting, now I have to go and order up the parts for the TEPS, too!

One thing though: I think you should change the name to 'Tangent Power Supply', that way we could do a report on it and it would be a TPS Report.

Try not to ground on the secondary side of the power supply. In some cases where a few CD player are grounded will prove fatal.

For example, X brand CD player uses supply voltage of +-15V and grounded 0V.
The PPA 0V is half the voltage of TEPS (Tangent Easy Power Supply), for example 12V reference to ground.

A short circuit is innevitable.

Is it possible to use a LM337 in this design (with the appropriate part changes/polarity reversal/etc.) to make a negative regulated supply? I'm looking to build a +/-15V supply. Or am I better off using LT1085/1033 like the Welborne PS1?

You're better off using the older PS-1 boards for US$5/ piece & dropping LM317T/ 337T reg's in there.

Cost is not an issue for me. I'm looking for maximum performance from a relatively simple circuit (i.e. my last resort is buying Jung Super Regular PCBs from Old Colony).

I'd rather go with the PS-1. The TEPS is not a dual-voltage circuit.

the TEPS is designed for use with Tangents PCBs which are all single voltage designs so no need for a dual supply

Yup, I know it's a single voltage supply, but I need a dual so I wanted to know if it would be easy to use the TEPS as a basis for a negative supply I guess some experimentation is in order!

With any type of isolated supply, you can take two of them and connect V- on one to V+ on the other like you'd do with a pair of 9V batteries. Each half is a positive regulator, but since they're isolated, the voltages can float anywhere you need them to be; if you strap two of them together, the midpoint is "ground", and the other two rails are V+ and V-. It would work just fine, but the parts cost would be unnecessarily high; you save at least the cost of the second transformer and the board space it takes up if you make a true dual supply. The transformer I use in the TEPS is perfectly capable of driving a pair of regulator circuits if I chose to make it do so, but it I didn't.

And no, you can't go dropping an LM337 into an LM317 board position. The pinouts are different.

I'm tempted to go make a dual-voltage version of the TEPS, but I lack a negative regulator IC to test it with. I guess I could make it use two positive regulators. Does this mightily offend anyone?

tangent: I just built a PPA, and since I already have an Elpac from my META42, I didn't get an extra one for the PPA, figuring I'd wait till you guys come up with a custom PPA power supply. But, I noticed that you remarked on a headwize thread:

No, it just means that RMAA is not the right tool for testing power supplies. It was in response to a request for noise graphs at the output of an amp, as opposed to the existing graphs of noise at the output of the power supply.
