S:Flow 2/T51?, how much of a step-up from Sony NWZ-A729

Hi,

I have a pair of Earsonics Sm3s, and I like to keep my rig relatively light with as few controls as possible so i don't want to carry an extra amp around. Currently my Sm3s are paired with a Sony A729 Walkman, but I find the noise floor to be high, and soundstage just a little lacking.

All my files are in 320 kbps CBR Mp3.

Would the headphone-out on an S:Flo2 be a substantial improvement with he Sm3s?  Furthermore I heard there is another site which sells the T51 (which is the exact same DAP right?) and ships it out faster than Mp4 nation. Could you help direct me to that.

Thanks, any help and suggestions would be appreciated. The SM3s are friggin awesome, very well-balanced and I want to talk advantage of them when I'm on the move.

I don't have an A729, but have the S:Flo2 (it is the same player) and if Amazon comes through will have the SM3 on Sat so will be able to provide some preliminary feedback.

I gotta say though... I'm finding the S:Flo2 to be a mixed bag. It's VERY 'phone dependent. With some, it's noisy (as in backlight/screen/whatever buzzes, etc) and with others not at all. Haven't figured out if it's my transcoding or the device but I also hear quite a bit of low-level 'burbling' as you'd hear from an MP3 encoded at too low a bitrate (but these are done at 320k so that can't be it).

You get noises when the screen is on and at the start/end of tracks, due to a voltage step-up or something. It's unavoidable unless you use the line-out and happens 100% of the time, which is one reason why people pair the player with a good amp like the Arrow. I swapped a really old Sony for my S:Flo2, which sounded much, much better (and was silent during playback - when the screen is off, of course), where as the Sony had quite a lot of hiss. Obviously newer Sony players might fare better, but I haven't heard them.
