This is one that I am absolutely aware of, for myself. Right now, downstairs, I have a new Panda HP amp playing. It sounds great, but is sitting on a chunk of 2x8 lumber. I know it would sound MUCH better in a thick metal case! LOL.
Seriously, some of the high-end gear is really beautiful, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to have good-looking stuff around the house. If I had unlimited cash, that's probably the justification I'd use for buying expensive gear- rather than convincing myself that it was 'all about the sound'....
