AKG 240s Stress fractures? Help?

Hi!

I bought a wonderful pair of AKG 240s headphones in October and I LOVE them! They sound amazing! But one day a few weeks ago, I was studying my beloved piece of audio equipment and I noticed this crack lurking on the edge.

I thought I was going to cry! I don't abuse them at all, I wear them around my neck when I'm not listening to them but that's about as crazy as it gets. So I'm confused as to how it got there, but I figured that I must have dropped them or something, but a few days later the other side got the almost exact same crack in almost the exact same place that WASN'T there when I saw the first one, I know because I specifically checked for a matching one one the other side. And all they did in between the first crack and the second crack was sit on my carpeted floor in my room, untouched save for a few short listening sessions.

Since I bought them through mail order with walmart, they never signed the warranty card so I don't know what I should do.

Also I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else! And if worse comes to worse and I have to buy two new parts (at like $9 each), how in the world do you get these things apart to replace that piece?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

how on earth did you do that? you had to hit them pretty hard to crack them or it was a really hard floor. mine i have i accidently dropped a few times and got my chair caught on the cable yanking them down to the floor. never experience  a single crack or sign of abuse.

you think you can use the search bar above for trying to figure how to take these apart. i don't know how to cause i never had a problem with mine or ever plan on modding them. i mean you can take them apart and use a little glue on the inside to keep them from cracking more or duct tape.

See?!? That's just it! The worse thing that has ever happened to them is they have fell off my bed onto the carpeted floor a couple of times and I have accidentally jerked on the cord a few times. I don't have any pets, younger siblings or roommates, so this didn't happen when I wasn't looking. And really, I treat my stuff pretty gentle. None of my DVDs (and I have over 500) have scratches, I keep my car washed and waxed, and my college dorm room stays clean. In short, I care . . . a lot about my stuff.

Here is the picture of the other side.

As you can see, same area, same type of crack, and the same unexplainable appearance. I'm thinking that this must be some sort of manufacturer error or something, that's got to be covered in the warranty, right? Right? triportsad.gif

That is sad.  I've never had any problems with the K240's I've owned in the past, and trust me those have seen it's fair share of abuse and drops (before I got it, worst I've done to that pair was drop it).  I'm a DIY guy, so I'd always opt to fix my own pairs.  Which side is it on?  Well you get into them by popping off the badges on the ends of the headbands where it goes into the cup (the big round ones).  There is a screw under there and once you remove that there is another screw or a pin, it's been a while.  there is service documents on AKG's site and if you search this site you should be able to pull up a thread where a guy takes apart an AKG K240 Sextett (same frame).  If I find it I'll post a link.  This thread should probably be in the headphone section.

How about extreme temperature changes?  Or dropping them when they are cold.

http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/279905/taking-the-k240-sextett-apart-step-by-step He already has his badges removed.  Only difference on your's is the one side has a U badge. That's on the side of the detachable cable.  (There is two screws.  After that it's completely the same).
