Player to go with ATH-M50's?

I have recently got a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50's (Awesome!) and since I have needed a new player for a while, my  iPod touch 2G 16GB doesn't have enough space, I figured what better time than now?

I am currently looking at:

iPod Classic 160 GB - £184

Cowon J3 32GB - £234

Cowon S9 32GB - £199

Sansa Clip+ 8GB + 32GB MicroSD - £96

With the impedance of the M50's being 38ohms, what concerns me is that the power output of both Cowons is 16ohms, where as the iPod is 32ohms and I don't even know what the clip+ is. I know that 32ohms is enough for me because that is what my current iPod has, I was wondering if I could get some clarification on what's the best because I don't want to spend so much money on a player but know that I could have bought something that sounds better. (Also I'm not completely sure what I'm talking with the ohms etc.)

Can any of you give me a pointer towards what I should get?

Stop looking at the stats. sometimes real world facts can just be wrong.

1. Think about your price range, if you can just throw money at it, go for the J3, if not, get Clip+

2. Storage. No one, I repeat NO ONE CAN LISTEN TO 160gb of music on a single battery charge. 32 is my max.

3. Are you using it for only audio? Then go for a S flo2

4. Battery life, Cowon

5. Flac? Cowon, Sansa

6. Customization? Cowon, Sansa

Go for the Cowon S9, good price, great audio, great video, UCI, all the good stuff.

If you want cheaper, go for a Clip+ and add a Fii0 E5 for a amp

A S flo2 is great for JUST audio, it has a line out and drive 99% of headphones without problem

Thanks for such a detailed reply. I do like the look of the s:flo2, does anyone know where I can get it in the UK? If anyone does and I can afford I will buy it instantly.

FWIW the classic currently has Rockbox being developed for it. That will mean full eq customization, great battery life (unlike the s:flo2), capacity (I don't need, I WANT 160gb), FLAC playback, hardware and software reliability (unlike the s:flo2), and all in a still quite pocketable format.

Otherwise, the Cowon J3 is leagues ahead of the s:flo2 as well - unless you like the constant worry of a player dieing on you all the time.

Wow, you just complicated things again. I'm guessing you don't like the s:flo2.
With rockbox on an iPod Classic could the sound improve to J3 level or would it not have that affect?
Does anyone have any experience with how well the Cowon J3 or S9 would drive my M50's? (In terms of quality and volume)
Also is the s:flo2 really that unreliable, does anyone else have experience of this?

Some people say the S Flo2 dies and crashes a lot. If you have a worry of it, just get a Cowon

Here, just order this:

Buy a Cowon S9, the Ui can be customized, the newest firmwares speed it up to the standard J3 has. It cheap, $210 for 32gb and has great audio, great battery, great video, and great functions.

enjoy.

@BotByte: Its not about being able to listen to 160gigs of music on one go, its being able to pick any artics from your 160gig collection on the go, or shuffle your whole collection...

@Kwame-Flip: Is this going to be your dayily player? Then I suggest considering that having more then 8-10 gigs of music on clip will be painfull to look for the artist you want, so I would scratch it of your list for daily use, it is a great work out player (and if you are concerend it does have about 38mW of output per channel or so I read...) To help your self decide ask your self several questions.

1) Do I need a large screen?

2) What size of player do I want, more then 16gig? more then 32 gig? more then 100gig?

3) Do I want to RockBox my player?

4) Am I going to use portable Amp with my player in the Future or ever(will it be possibel to havea line out on it)?

5) What music file formats I want my player to play? (FLAC, ALAC, MP3, WMA, APE...)

6) Battery life? 8hrs, 10hrs, 20hrs, 30hrs?

After you answer those questions look for payer that has most of those features you want. And decide from there.

Thanks for the help, I think I am just going to get a J3 and not bother worrying about the money because at least I know what I am getting is quality.
