Recommendations for a Metalhead

Thread Starter

Lately, I have been listening to Agalloch, Insomium, Opeth, and Arsis. I am looking for some folk, viking, or melodic death metal that I haven't heard yet. Any suggestions? Also looking for more recent releases, or any release that was well recorded.

Then check out the newest "Sirenia" stuff

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check 'em out.

You may like Leave's eyes, they are a gothic metal band but with some influences of viking.

I'll give them a listen as well. Thanks!

Ayreon is one of my favorites. some of their stuff has folk influences, and they have a few melodic death metal type songs. most of Ayreon's stuff is on the calmer more spacey progressive side though. Opeth is of course great, but you already seem to know that. make sure to check out all of Opeth's stuff if you haven't already.

nice guy Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon), he attends a lot of prog.concerts in Holland

his new Star One record is also a fine piece of work

Isis -  The Red Sea

Their heaviest album, and maybe their best. One of my favorite metal albums. If you like it, check out "Celestial" too.

I have heard Isis' material before and was pretty impressed. My friend has some stuff of theirs, so I'll ask to borrow it. Thanks for the reminder/suggestion.

Delain is a melodic metal band, they're awesome.

i reckon anyone into Opeth would dig Enslaved.

and, in a more power-metal / viking-metal vein, i think you might enjoy Amon Amarth.

I will check out Enslaved. Also I totally forgot to mention Amon Amarth in my first post. I love Amon Amarth! My favorite album from them is With Oden On Our Side.

What Enslaved album should I check out?

Everything by Isis and Neurosis is awesome. Two of my favorite bands. Panopticon and Oceanic are their best works, but aren't as heavy as their first several (if that's what you're into).

I'll just post the usual recommendations. These will be all kinds of Progressive Metal, but I'll try and keep it within what you asked for in the OP. Bolded = more awesome.

Alcest

Ameosuers (same guy from Alcest)

Baroness

Burst (Lazarus Bird)

Gojira

Katatonia

Mastodon

Primordial (To the nameless Dead)

Solstafir

Strapping Young Lad (City)

Wolves in the Throne Room

You've probably already heard a lot of what I just posted, but hopefully you find something new. I tend to stay in the Progressive side of metal, and away from the "WE PLAY THE HEAVIEST SH*T EVAR" bands.
