is it just me or does the 6g ipod classic sound very bad. i noticed lots of distortion with it. this distortion i do not get with my laptop. my ipod touch 2g is a little better but it still distorts. but then again my ipod touch is only an 8gb ersion so i only added songs at 128kbps so i think thats why.

My sansa E series - I don't remember the model. It used to run 128 back in the day when I was simpler. I noticed distortion but it was way lower the any ipod out now a days.

I've always have seen ipods as BIG MONEY MAKERS. If you like your touch for only music and video, sell it, buy a cowon, if you like the apps keep it.

Ipod will always be ipods, They will always be mediocre player at BEST. IMO!

people here tend to use the line-out of ipod and attach it to external amp to improve the sound quality, the headphone out of ipod (maybe not all generation/model) is known to be standard.

maybe you should use a higher bitrates of mp3 like 256kbps LAME encoding

If you're using EQ on the iPod then it's no wonder you're getting distortion. iPod EQ is bad. And yeah, try higher bit rate with a known high quality recording and test it out.

New Classics which are on Cirrus sounds much better.

Apple changed the DAC from what they had (I believe, Wolfsons) when the went from the 4G and the 5 and 5.5G models to the 6 to save money. There were protest articles written about it. The size and the DAC is why Red Wine Audio stopped doing iMods after the 5.5G version. Evidently Apple moved over to Cirrus to save a couple of beans, and figured that the average iPod listener wouldn't notice the difference.

Head-Fidians are a select breed, but 200,00 members is nothing compared to world sales to non-audiophiles.

I had the same problem. My classic is a 160gb version bought in 2009. It produced some distortion when used with Grado SR80i, but amping helped. I got an Audio Technica AT-PHA30i, which is made for ipod and doubles as a remote which is cool. There have been some problems with the unit though and I wouldn't really recommend it.

I can hear the difference between 2006 Video (very bad in original firmware and very good with Rockbox), 2007 80Gb (better than unrockboxed 5.5),  2008 (good) and 2009 (very good).

I was own all of them.

Has anyone tried the new Pure i20 with the 6th gen yet. I'm assuming using it as a transport to an external dac should sound as good as the external dac? I hope.

The 6G from 2007 did indeed sound atrocious. The 6.2 / 7G classic sounds cleaner with good bass, but it's bright and lacks resolution. In other words, it also sounds atrocious. It depends on what you are after. I liked the 5.5G the best, but others prefer the 6.2/7G for its powerful clean sound. If sound quality is your first priority, iPods are not the way to go.
