Wearing AKG k271 or ATH-M50

I've narrowed my search down to these 2 pairs and I feel like the last factor has come down to aesthetics. I've heard you look ridiculous wearing the K271's due to their massive size, even though I prefer the look in terms of the headphone alone. The ATH-M50s look rather lackluster by themselves but it might make up for it by being smaller when being worn.

Unfortunately, my google images searches were rather unfruitful and I have almost no references of how either look on someone's head. Would anyone mind taking a picture of themselves while wearing either set? Or if you aren't too comfortable splashing your face on head-fi maybe just your own opinion of how you look with either one on.

Thanks!

i think it's personal preference. personally, i'd wear even my K701's around if they were closed. i doubt you'll be able to put the 271's around your neck when you aren't using them however. the K701's feel like wearing a neck brace

On that note, I wear my headphones around the top of my head like a crown when not listening. A lot of people seem to think that's weird. Don't know why. tongue_smile.gif

Just wearing the K271's I don't think they look too weird, but I'm used to oversized headphones, so I wouldn't be the type to pass judgment.

True about AKG K 271/272 HD (exact same shape) feeling like neck braces when not worn on ears, and I'd say the ATH-M50 are better in portable use since they don't have the ridiculous seeming metal band autofit system the AKG headphones share which makes you look like an UFO with the bands floating over your head etc.. Then again I'm nothing short of a shallow person (and then again you asked about the looks of them, so here's my 2c)

Wow I can't I believe I overlooked the around-neck factor. To me, the 271's are nothing short of sexy, but if it's not practical to wear around neck... :(

The M50's are really almost ugly to me. The sharp, straight rise for the elevated headband connecting hinge part really kills it.

well, you could wear them like a crown as previously posted, or get some sort of carrying case to put in your bag (assuming you're a student looking to use them at school [that's what i'm doing when i get them] or using them at work)

Just tried it too...meh. Vanity vs. pragmatism

Also as a point of reference, I don't mind walking with the AD-700's around my neck for short periods. At this point, if anyone wants to push another pair around $150, closed, I'm open for consideration. Took a peek at the HFI-780s in the last couple of hours.

@JPrez,

My situation is actually a little weird. I live at a residential high school so school is home for me XD. I already have some IEMs and a pair of CAL!'s for on-the-go, but what I need is a good set of closed, full size cans to listen to while I'm in my room or walking around my hall (which is where the size factor comes into effect). I'll be going from room to room and generally stopping for conversation so that's when I'll need to rest it on my neck, and because I won't be solely listening in the privacy of my own room the aesthetics play a role.

Quick update: Considered the HFI-580's for awhile, but ended up against it. S-Logic seemed gimmicky. Going with the K271's after all. Thanks to everyone who replied. Will Probably cycle back to try the M50's someday or if my budget improves maybe DT880s.

You mean like this right (I apologize, I couldn't find a better picture:P)?

I do that sometimes too, doesn't seem that weird to me :S

I think you're putting way to much emphasis on looks because these 2 headphones couldn't possibly sound more different.  The K271 is super light, airy, bright and bass lite, and the M50 has hard hitting bass that is like a well done subwoofer, and a much more heavy, full sound.

I know there's a drop off in the low end, but wasn't sure to what extent, didn't come across any freq graphs. I haven't heard too many complaints about the bass and certainly not "lite".

The K271 are some of the most bass-lite headphones I've ever heard.  If you had much less bass it would cease to exist entirely.  They do have a beautiful, light, feathery sound, but it's certainly not neutral.  Still nice though if that's what you're looking for.  And velour pads help to bring out warmth and bass, so get the MKii version if you go for the K271
