Why do ( some ) people call HD600/HD650 boring cans ? - Page 4

It's more the smooth treble and slow decay rather than the neutrality. The HD 650 is not a neutral headphone at all.

Listen to a headphone with natural, realistic mids and emotion. It will answer the question easily.

So I finally took my steps in Senns since yesterday, I  was curious about the Senns sound and also about the difference between 580/600 and 650's. In many topics 600-650 are talked about if they're almost the same (not all).

Yesterday my 580's and 650's came in, 600 have to come yet. I have to say, they differ very much. I can understand why people would call 650's 'boring'.

It's just something very different than high treble cans, which I also love. I actually love the fact that headphones differ.

For what I've heard until now, the 650's need some time I think. When I listened for the first time yesterday, a-b comparing with 580's and also Beyer DT990's, the 650's are way more laid back (also a lot more then 580's), they're much darker. I liked the 580's more yesterday.

Now today, I've listened to the 650's some more and they're growing on me. I hear they are actually a little bit more detailed then the 580's, they're much more musical than I thought 'at first hearing'. I can imagine you can fall asleep with these headphone, but that's not always a bad thing. It's a 'relaxing, non fatiquing' headphone, very different in experience from say Grado's, DT990's, D7000's.

I have to get the HD600's today, but if they're more like the 580's (and they are, according to thousands of written pages), I think I'll choose the 650's to stay and sell the other two at the FS section, where I expected the 580's or 600's to be staying.

To be on topic, I wouldn't call 650's boring. But I would call them dark, laid back, relaxing, soothing, forgiving, and even comforting. A nice option to have lying around for moments you don't want to rock your heads off, but just want some nice and relaxing listening, and also want to enjoy some detail. They wouldn't be my favourite cans, but there's more to these 'than meets the eye (ear)'.

K701 boring, i think that varies on the amp there.

I find my k701 to be lively and interesting with its timbre..it doesn't sound like the hd650, or dt880 but is close somewhat.

I can't describe what music on my k701 is like..airy..detailed..open and i use this on the bcl and in your face.

I did something that I' ve never done for some thirty years ppaying with mid-end/ hi-end audio gear that is playing with the damned tone control on my Pio A 35r  to make the 595 less veil and bloating.

Incoherent pair of canns, period. I maybe dead wrong after 200 hours of burn-in but I do not have 200 hours playing arounf with the tone control. Some one please take me out of the misery by tell me the truth that the HD595 is a not a veil pair of cans after so many hours of burn-in .

Hi, Slaughter. I also suspect that the  Pio A35r headphone amp jack is a POS. I am going to search for some HP amps from  Schiit .I am not sure if I want tubes or SS. They both have a trade-off.  I am entertaining the idea of sending back the HD595 to get the HD 598 since the HD 595 has a low rating at Testfreaks. I have the HD 380 coming to compare with my HD280 .

The 650 is close to the 701/880? I know it's all subjective but, wow, that's a mental stretch. I'd have said they come from different universes.

Here's a thing though: when I first listened to the 880 (32ohm), I was taken back by the brightness after the HD650. Then after listening for a while it began to occur to me that there was a similarity in the sound, that the 880 actually sounded like the 650 with a huge treble boost. I was using an integrated amp, so I turned the treble right down to almost nothing and found I was right, there was a real similarity once the treble was reduced. Consequently I was really surprised the other day when comparing the 650 and 880 FR responses at Headroom to find that below 3khz there was an astonishingly similarity such as you rarely see between different brands (or even the same brand). It's as though Beyer has used a Senn driver and tweaked the treble.

Anyway, apparently my aged ears are actually better than I thought they were.

Most of the times people who find the 650's boring, don't have a good source for them. Or probably they don't like the sound signature.

I do enjoy listening to my 650's. smily_headphones1.gif

Interesting observations. I have a pair of VERY recent HD600s and on a whim popped them on last week. In short, they're excellent, and with a more forward midrange and sujectively more pronounced bass than the Beyer T1s that get most of my headtime. Quite different from my old 580s and more forward than the 650s. I happen to think that they're very fine phones, and with far better PRAT than I remember. A nice surprise.
