hey people!

ive had my eye on these cans for some time, but was drawn away because of shallow fit as some mentioned and them being not too comfy in general. but the sound sig is exatcly what im looking for (V shaped more or less, great quality bass and good clarity with other freq's)

so hows the comfort on them ? and is the cable possible to replace with a shorter one for portable use ?

and id be grateful in general if any1 knows any other closed cans with this kind of sound and price range, with removable cables....i just love em removable cables :D

I thought they may fit his inquiry as they have the features he asked about; detachable cable and a V-shaped FR, which probably isn't as pronounced as the Ultrasone's.

Maybe the Sennheiser HD25-1 II/Amperior (new HD25 with metal ear cups), AKG's DJ headphones (K81/K518 and K181) maybe V-Moda's LP 2's, just to name a few more.

The bad: Thanks to this thread, I ordered a pair of 580s off Amazon last week. They came in yesterday before noon, I plugged them in, and only one phone worked.  Bad connection. I was able to listen to them briefly by messing with where the cord connected to the phones.

The good: I immediately did an RMA with Amazon, they cross-shipped, and Amazon got the new pair here today 

Initial impressions: Wow! Great bass. I love my subs in my home audio setups, and here is a set of headphones that feels like it has a quality sub built in. The bass of the 580s is probably a few db hot for my taste, but I'm not complaining  Overall, good balance of mid range and highs to accompany the bass. I can already see why people are loving them, and they are definitely an improvement over my Sony MDR-V6s. I didn't encounter any clamping tightness that people complain about. I have a big head (most of the one size fits all baseball caps don't fit me), and was easily able to size the 580s for my head. 

I'm really looking forward to what they sound like tomorrow evening after they've broken in for over 20 hours.  

The so-so: I'm sure my middle school age son is going to want mine when he hears them during the holidays this year (he spends Xmas and summers with me). So even though I'll have to buy a 2nd pair, at least part of my holiday shopping is already done. LOL

I'm about to pull the trigger on HFI 580s on Amazon but I'm still not 100% sure.

Firstly, I find them pretty ugly, but that's beside the point. I guess I can blacken the metal or something.

Secondly, nobody can seem to agree on the treble they deliver. Almost everyone seems to agree that they have deep, tight bass (right up my alley), but descriptions of the treble range from rolled-off to overwhelming/fatiguing. My ears get burnt out on harsh treble extremely quickly.

Thirdly, how durable are they? I will be carrying them around in a bag with textbooks at college 2-3 days per week all day long.

I'm considering ordering more than one of my top candidates (HFI-850, ATH-M50, Q40, HM5, maybe a pair of Sennheisers?) then keeping the one I like and returning the rest to Amazon, but I've never used this strategy before. Is it a 100% surefire deal that they'll take them back and refund me or do I have like a 20% chance of getting stuck with $700 of headphones? Haha. I have prime so it would be free 2 day shipping for everything. Tempting.

Stick to Amazon, and not Amazon Marketplace vendors, and I think you'll find it to be painless. I've returned quite a few things. They make it pretty easy, even to the point of printing out a UPS shipping label that they then bill you for shipping in the return credit (no waiting inline at the UPS store). Here's their Electronics return policy.

Then you should get the DJ1's which already has black metal....

If the shiny sides on the 580's are anything like my 780's then they scratch by looking at them the wrong way...

Does " Sold by __________ and fulfilled by Amazon" count as Amazon?

Unfortunately the DJ1s cost an extra $30+ on Amazon. Not sure why if they're the same thing.

They are both MSRP of $219 just a better sale on the 580's.

So I'll see if I like the 580s/DJ1s soon enough.

Sorry. I can't remember for certain if Amazon handles returns for "fullfilled by Amazon" or not. Seems like I might have ordered an HK receiver that I demoed at home and returned, and I had to use Amazon to contact the seller and then RMA directly through them, but not certain. 

It's not that I've had bad experiences returning to other vendors on Amazon. It's just Amazon makes it hassle free through their website. Instantaneous approval. 

Gotta say.  My only issue with these really is the length of the cord.  Hardly portable.
