Driver Mod

Hey, I'm making/modding my own headphone from scratch using various parts (which onces complete I will post the worklog here) and after recabling these drivers while ago I had loctite the wires to the top base of the drivers, using a stanley knife separating the wires from the driver itself has resulted in some deep cuts into the side foam paper that is isolating the inner coils. Just a questions can I remove this surrounding foam paper and expect better soundstage and quality from the drivers? Or would it make the sound worse...and I have to find some kind of foam paper to replace it? Its only the right side thats bit damaged, I'm going to recable it now, so would be great to hear some feedback by the time I'm done. Thanks

There should be holes under the thin felt and poking holes in it can increase bass. There is no point to remove the entire thing and removing the entire thing likely would hurt the sound quality. This thread covers doing this mod to grado headphones.

Thanks, finally a reply. As for the bass, theres plenty of bass on these 45mm drivers, there were taken off some old studio monitors and I'm using these well burnt in (over 2000 hours) drivers into a new headphone housing so yeah it is very bassy, but was wondering if it could improve the SQ and soundstage if the paper felt was removed. I will check out and confirm with the link you provided. Thanks Again.

EDIT: Posting pics tmw for this project I'm doing in my free time. Turning out good so far.
