Is AKG K601 Wired the Same as the K701 for DIY Balanced Termination? Not my K601s

Hey Now,

Just got a balanced amplifier and DAC. I have a pair of K601s I thought I would terminate balanced with a 4-pin male XLR. Is the K601 wired the same as the K701?

Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly it has the same 4 conductor cable.  The color coating should be the same as the K701s, there is no logical reason to change it.  The service document probably notes what each color wire is.

http://www.akg.com/site/powerslave,id,7,nodeid,7,_language,EN,cat,11.html scroll down to K601, K701.  This service document is not entirely correct.  It shows only 3 of the 4 connectors on the cable.  Red and yellow are both positive, white is one negative wires and there is another one, which I cannot recall the color but it's the other ground, the ground for the red positive wire I think.

Hey Now,

Thanks. I found this diagram . . . . .

Oh, there is the 4th wire, I guess it's correct. It's just a messy drawing.

L + Yellow

L - White

R + Red

R - Black

I remember Yellow, Red, and white, but I cannot remember the 4th color from the last time I opened my K701, it's most likely the black wire.

Hey Now,

Guess what, I cut the headphone cord on my K601s tonight and it is only 3 wire. I just got my A-GD ROC and wanted to have a balanced pair of headphones. Lucky I had an extra 1/4" Neutrik jack laying around, back in business, but only SE.

Anyone want to buy a nice pair of K601s? beerchug.gif

Seriously?  Man, I'm sorry.  I thought I saw 4 conductor on the K601 a while back.  AKG claims it has a "Bi-wired cable" must be lies.  AKG is making two different cables for the K601 and K701 or have they switched to three conductor cables?  I guess it's going to be a total recable if you want a balanced K601.  That or get a K701 cable (making sure it's a 4 conductor cable (unless they changed at as well)).

Hey Now,

Yeah, a complete re-cable is what the K601s need. I think I am going to try it, though. I will save up for some nice headphone cable and re-cable the K601s later. It shouldn't be too difficult. Thanks for the encouragement.

I just re-terminated my woodied SR325s to a 4-pin XLR and did a complete re-cable and balanced conversion on my Fostex T40 v1. I used a Cat6 ethernet cable for the Fostex re-cabling. I stripped the outer sheath and used the 8 26awg wires, 4 pairs were already twisted nice and tight, I braided the 4 together. Sounds decent for a $5 cable 8^). Boy do the balanced headphones sound fantastic through the A-GD Roc.

I personally wouldn't spend a lot for a fancy wire/cable for re-cabling.  Long as it is a good quality 99.99% oxygen free cable that is durable and has a quality insulation I'm happy as a clam.  I'm not a silver cable fanatic.  Ethernet cable wouldn't be by first choice.  Best of luck.  Post pictures of your nice re-cabled K601 once you get it done.  I appreciate and respect good craftsmanship.
