I have been contemplating writing a post like this for weeks, but because I am not in the market to make cables for strangers so I've been reluctant to do so. But after my recent experience with my beloved SRH940, I feel compelled to do this. I feel like I owe it to all of you who also love SRH940...

I've dabbled in making my own custom cable for SRH940 and made a pure silver cable as well as now settled on a cheaper, but still reasonable spec Silver Plated Copper cable, stranded with teflon coating. The differences from original straight or curled cable sound quality wise is phenomenal! The difference is extremely noticeable and substantial in all aspects, mids, bass. I attribute this to the very thin original cable, I've cut one up and inspected it and can't tell you how disappointed I was...

Anyway, I can make these cables for anyone who is interested. One thing straight: I am not trying to make money out of this, I want to do it out of the kindness of my heart honestly, feeling that you guys really need to hear SRH940 with custom cables, and what you're all missing out on. I want to do this for head-fi members because I've gotten so much from Head-Fi, I believe I should give some back sometimes... It's my hobby, and since you guys share this hobby too, I feel I owe it to you to...

Now with that out of the way, I can make them any length you want, with any connectors you want, in any colour sleeve you want. I can even make it red like those beats cables you see around (if that takes your fancy). I plan to just offer plain black with black plugs but there are many options. I am thinking that in total the cost will be ~$50 for the cable for all materials plus postage to anywhere in the world. It takes about 2 hours to make one cable no joke so I am not going to get rich anytime soon. So for now I am only going to offer to the first 10 interested SRH940 owning members (don't fancy spending all my spare time on cables making no profit!!!)

EDIT: Here is what I wrote months back when mucking around with custom cables: http://www.head-fi.org/t/533716/shure-srh-940/3405

What I want to know is how many of you are interested in this, if at all? If noone is interested then pfft no worries, saves me time and hassle. If you are interested, PM me and I will take it from there, including pics and cable options. Please, no time wasters. If you do not want a custom cable for your SRH940 and are not willing to pay $50pp then don't PM me!

I was thinking, if interest is high, I can let one custom made cable do a world tour of Head-Fi so you can all try it out yourselves. Anyway PM me

Mods: Sorry if I am breaking any rules, but I really am not trying to make a buck from this. $50 is really cutting it fine on my own costs! Solder, plugs, and most of all time.

Here are the optional sleeve colours available for the cable: http://de.mdpc-x.com/mdpc-sleeve/sleeve.htm

I simply do not believe any cable will make a difference to the unbelievable sound I'm currently getting from my 940.  I would not mind making a modest expenditure (in the name of science!!) to put this to the test.  I would really love to be shown wrong -- which would then require me to do some major research to explain what's going on.  But I'm extremely skeptical --- and willing.

Hey Bob,

Good on you for at least being willing. No obligation to buy at this stage, will add you to the "World Tour" list

SRH940 Custom Cable World Tour List:

Rhuidk

John In Cali

BobJS

As promised here are the pictures. First few are of the cable itself.

400400400

(Click on the pics to see bigger pics)

The next pic shows the original cable on the left with the three very thin strands. The right is the teflon coated, stranded, Silver Plated Copper cable that I propose to use in the $50 cable, there will be 3 of these in a braid, then sleeved. The connector is a gold plated Sennheiser branded plug but the proposed plug will be a black Furutech gold plated plug which I feel is better quality. The other side is a customised 2.5mm connector that slips into the Shure connector via friction. It is very secure and does not need twist lock action to secure it. No damage or modification to the headphones themselves. I use Cardas Quad Eutectic solder. I propose a 1.5meter (5ft) length

Lastly I have done the maths properly and revised the price, if I make 10 total, it will cost $40 plus postage. For most of you this means $50 posted to your door. This is for a 1.5m (5ft) black sleeved cable, colours and longer length may cost a little more, not sure at this stage, have to redo maths...

Now if anyone who has a bigger budget wants to use good, brand name cable material instead, or some nice Oyaide jacks etc, feel free to PM me and we can work something out...

Anyway I think the first order of the day is for this cable to go on a world tour!

UPDATE: Cable will be starting it's tour on Monday to BobJS. If you are interested in testing this cable on your SRH940, for the cost of posting it to the next person then speak up!

So the headband arrived today and .... it doesn't fit for 940. The headband is simply too long in length but too short in width. The 940's headband is too fat for this headband. So I tried to remove the 940's headband, but I couldn't do it.. frown.gif

I wonder if Thunder240 received his. Hopefully he did and found a solution to fit on the 940.

Sad to hear. Hopefully for some strange reason Thunder's will fit (unlikely though) or hopefully you can come up with some creative way to make it work.

After trying to figure out how I can make this possible to fit on the 940, the idea of using velcro came up since the 940's headband was simply too fat for the replacement headband to get it wrapped.

So, this is what I did and it works! biggrin.gif

I first added velcro on the replacement headband then on 940 headband. I added total of 12 velcros. (6 on each headband)

Finished product photos.

Although it looks quite ugly, once you wear it, it's so much more comfortable to wear it now. The downside is that I have to stretch the sides more to around 8~9ish because of the thickness of 940's and replacement headband. (I normally keep it under 5 without the replacement headband added). So it is more exposure to cracks :(   (I already have 6 cracks that I have already super glued them)

For those of you who want to do this method, i think (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/352734-REG/Sennheiser_052715_H_52715_Replacement_Headband.html) replacement headband of 580 will be a lot more easier and look much more cleaner than this. It's cheaper too! I originally bought the replacement headband that I have with me right now, thinking replacement headband could wrap it around the 940's headband, but I was wrong..

My band is scheduled to arrive Monday. I'm pretty resourceful, not quite MacGuyver, but I may be able to think of a way to make it work. Either way, I'll let everyone on the forum know.

Lillee, could you add me to the custom cable world tour? I'm intrigued.

Location = San Francisco, CA

Well, I think Rhuidk's solution to velcro the replacement band onto the underside of the stock band is the best approach. The only improvement I was able to come up with was to use a razor blade to cut off the two "sides" that stick out and get in the way. (These sides would be used to wrap around the Grado stock headband for which this replacement was intended, but they are too narrow for the Shure.) With the sides removed, the fit is okay, though not quite perfect

One thing I can say is that the added cushion is quite welcome, and the velour on the replacement has a comfortable texture. I consider this a definite improvement for a small sacrifice in looks, especially because I was considering selling the 940's because the stock band is so **** uncomfortable!

How does it look after removing the two sides? I was going to do this at first but I was worried if there were going to be more things sticking out after cutting it, making it even more uglier.

Quick update on the Cable World Tour, it seems postal service is very very slow. I sent BobJS the cable on Monday 30th July and he has still not received the cable! Will update when he receives it.

If it has not turned up by next week I will have to make other arrangements...
