Well honestly I don't think the Beyers are more detailed than the SRH940s...I didn't compare directly (should have though probably), but I think they're on par for the most part. I suppose if I buy DT880s for myself for christmas (very likely) I can post an extensive sound comparison here before I sell the SRH940s.

I know this would be useful because, although there are a few sentences here and there, there's not much comparison between these headphones. And the DT880s are pretty much the only open-back detail-monster I know to compete with the SRH940, with AKG K701s being reviewed as markedly inferior by Malvaux.

Again I don't want to have to sell my SRH940s but the fact that they simply don't fit, and therefore give pain and end up breaking, kind of forces me here.

Did you think the 940 and 800 had similar sound signitures? Is it more like a super upgrade or a different beast? Did the store carry any Stax?

No Stax. It's hard to say how similar the sound signature is with the 940 because I didn't compare directly, but I'd say they do have kind of similar sound signatures, but not exactly. The HD800 is better balanced and sounds much smoother IMO since the bass is not lacking in areas where the SRH940 is, FR-wise. Sound quality wise, the HD800 is a league ahead in every way I could detect. Most impressive was the instrument separation and soundstage, due to the incredible detail it produces.

Instrument separation and detail is wayyyyy beyond the SRH940. There's no comparison. The HD800 even blows away the LCD2 IMO, simply because its soundstage is miles ahead of it, and IMO the bass is incredibly crisp and defined and more than impactful enough for my ears.

On first listen.

Own them for a few months and report back.

Looks like the SRH-940 might have some direct competition.  I know I might be checking them out.  If they provide 940 detail and isolate well (I personally think the 940 leaks too much to be used in public) I might be shuffling some gear around.

These don't get very loud out of my iPhone. Anyone else have similar experience?

i didnt know the 940 leaks ...

but as far as isolation from outside noise is concern, it isolates very well..

my home TV went silent / and my wife went dumb ..once i put on the 940...:P

At the shop, what kind of set up was given for u to test all those cans?

With all the variation of ohms of each cans vs matching to the gears etc etc,

u will get a feel of the the sound but it might not be very indicative.

eg the denon d2000 doesnt sound slopping in the area of bass in my setup.

infact it is one of my fav cans hehe. ...

or maybe my ears love slopping bass. its a possibility :)

I have my volume capped at 35%-ish and my on-the-go music sounds just fine (pop, rock, electronica).

Regarding the headband, I wear mine at level 4 so that the top of the inner-earpads almost hook over the top of ears.

Is it just me? I find the K550's really ugly...they kind of remind me of the Beats Pros with the headband, poofy-looking pleather earpads (they remind me of curling stones), and the angled arms holding the earcups.

Sorry for being off topic...that just popped up in my mind when I saw the K550's.

It was meant as a joke. Don't take it seriously.
