Barnes and Noble - NookColor Android Tablet Review - Page 3

there should be no difference, the browsing speed is equally as fast as the ipad in my experience and depends on which browser you are using actually.  There are so many free browsers, each a little different.  But as for speed capability for wireless internet via a router, they are the same.

and no, rooting wont make any difference unless you use the new overclocking, im using it and i dont see a difference in browsing online, but i do see one browsing around the tablet offline through apps and boot up

could be, but more likely the stock barnes and noble browser was the problem, its twice as slow as opera or dolphin

That makes sense too. I guess I'd better try it once again, now that I know more.

Don't forget to take in account the strength of the WiFi signal and if the store's Internet is getting hit pretty hard. The unit I played with in Best Buy last night was loading pages slow but the signal wasn't very good. Once the pages were loaded the smoothness of the scrolling was on par with the Galaxy Tab.

Actually, that gives me an idea. There are 2 B&N stores around and one is in a bit more upscale locale. Possibly they might have better connection. I'll go to that one when I get a chance and play more with NC, see how the experience would be different.

Anybody get it working with a USB DAC yet?

I just spent an hour with tech support trying to diagnose why HD videos have problems and do not play on the default media player.  I was told to restore the unit and upon doing so it wont connect back to my router, lol.

seems anything with an HD tag does not play, I was wrong about the nook being able to play real HD video, the files I used were not true HD and when I actually tried to play real HD, the files did not open.  Arcmedia was the only app that i could find that would even open an HD video but it was terribly sluggish and choppy.

The unit cannot play HD video it seems, Sorry for the misinformation.  Any video that is taken from youtube that is HD will not play regardless of what conversions you attempt to make to it,whether it be size ratio or audio related, or even file type.  Hopefully the next update will fix these issues.

I'm assuming good quality MP4 videos still look pretty good, yes?

YES, as an example there are some dragonball Z music videos taken directly off youtube that are not in HD but still look awesome, vibrant and crisp.

I really can't complain since the unit is not a media player, its an e book tablet lol.  The ability to play videos is just a huge bonus and I am really asking way too much of it.  It seems to have issues playing anything that was in HD.  But again, other media looks pretty good on it.  I had a 100+ videos on it and all of the higher quality mp4s looked excellent and had perfect frame rates.

Good to hear. I am getting close to pulling the trigger on this. I figure if anything, at least I can have a tablet till the ones coming out gain some maturity.

This will be a fun little geeky exploration! tongue.gif

Just read that there is a firmware update now available for the Nook Color. So this begs the question, if I buy one and update the firmware, does it affect the rooting process?

If you get it, I would recommend putting the update on it first then rooting it.

From what I see on the XDA forum they are going back to stock, applying the update then rooting it.

I would check their site first.

It really is a great little tablet.

Lots of fun if you are the type that does not mind doing some minor hacking to end up with a really great piece of tech.

Finally pulled the trigger on one of these, a $189 refurb via ebay.  Should be arriving any time between today and friday (obviously hoping for today!).  Any recommendations for audio and video apps?  Mostly planning on using it for video and web, but if there's a decent lossless audio player, it'd be fun to try it out.

And yes, I fully intend to root it and put Cyanogenmod 7 on it immediately after applying the update.  :)
