Barnes and Noble - NookColor Android Tablet Review

( ** Note: my wallpaper is a live moving wallpaper, it is blurred because of that :D )

7 inch Multi-touch LCD Screen

8gb with micro sd card slot

15.8oz

Wi Fi enabled Internet

Android OS

$249.99

Before I begin, I wanted to say I've owned and tested the more popular tablets and found all of them to be poor values for me.  Barnes and Noble created a beast in this Nook Color tablet.  I am very impressed. I did decide to ROOT this tablet, giving it full access to the android market which only increased the overall value of this monster to astronomical levels.  If you don't care about 3g coverage, and are usually always near a router, this is the tablet for you.

First, the screen is just gorgeous and I am sorry my pictures do not do it justice.  It is incredibly lively and bright, colors are rich and vibrant.  It looks fantastic and uses the identical screen as the ipad.  It is a multi touch, so you can enjoy many games and applications that support it, picture editing is easy and a few of the free android Internet browsers like Dolphin support multi touch, pinch zoom.  The stock browser by Barnes and Noble does not support it and uses giant + and - buttons.  If you root your nook, you wont be using anything that is stock except the media players and settings menu.

It does not support flac, but there are free applications on Androids Market that do support it, however I am having trouble finding one that backs up their claims.  Compression levels seem to play a huge role, some flac works, most do not.  However, the stage and smoothness of the media player is grand.  It is very large and spacious and a drastic improvement over something like my Sansa Clip.  Noticeable clarity and stage size boost.  One problem I found is that the speakers are very poor, and do not raise to high enough volumes...they are on the BACK SIDE, so when you have your player laying down, it is even further muffled.  Also the standard 3.5mm jack has a few fit issues, it is a little too small to fit standard jacks well, they require too much force to put in and pull out.

I've found only a few issues that are minor inconveniences like the player not having any setting to remove the sleep function, it only goes from 5 minutes to 1 hour before the screen with auto shut off and go to sleep mode.  A bit annoying but a feature easily fixed by an update or android app to control it.  Also, the lack of file support is very annoying, AVI does not play on it and for some reason, mp4 plays perfectly and the player and screen itself support full 720 HD video.  AND IT REALLY DOES IT!  It's not like one of those junk players that says it can play it...and when it does it just plays the aspect ratio and the overall quality is dirt...the NookColor PLAYS 720HD video and it looks amazing.  Again ( its the same as the Ipad screen )  It is beautiful.

The player itself is immensely solid and feels like a serious piece of gear, it is on the heavy side and there isnt a hint of "poor quality or even just decent quality" feeling when you hold it.  It feels very high in quality.  WiFi is fast and I've had no problems with this player at all minus the few file types that are not yet supported.  Battery life on full brightness and wi fi enabled is about 4 hours, with wifi off and brightness at a still beautiful 50%, I got about 8 hours.

Some Android apps through the market do not work as they are only meant for phones, but can still be installed and viewed.  Flash is not supported but Youtube and Facebook are stock apps and work wonderfully in portrait or landscape mode.  Amazon kindle ON A BARNES AND NOBLE TABLET IS NOT ONLY FUNNY BUT EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING!!! Kindle works perfectly and looks amazing, free books off amazon for the win!

Live wallpaper is amazing and gorgeous.  One thing that sets this tablet apart is its processor, it is A MONSTER! I run 10-15 apps at once with 0 lag.  For example right now, Facebook, Pandora, the Dolphin Internet Browser, Xfire Mobile, Live Video wallpaper ( which off the android market is just amazing, the Matrix code is ridiculous and stunning ), Alarm Clock, Weather Channel, Gmail and a few other random apps I always keep on all running at once with no sign of sluggishness.  I also use it while it is plugged in and being charged.

amazing tablet, 9/10 value and it would be a 10/10 if it had better file support and a video out.  Android 2.3 and beyond is slated to be released for it very soon.  cant wait for that, insane value.

Apps you need to install immediately once you root it:

-Easy Uninstaller

-Dolphin HD Browser

-Advanced Task Killer ( likely the most important to clear up memory )

-File Browser of your choosing for easy access to your root menus for your media

I lucked up and got my at my company Christmas party.

Two other people got them also, but had no idea what it was and exchanged them with others for their lesser gifts.

I know what it was the moment I saw the first one come out of the bag. wink_face.gif

Here's mine -

I have rooted it, and use the Zeam launcher along with the Koi pond live wallpaper (only works in portrait), but I change it 2 or 3 times a day with Flikie Wallpaper app.

You are correct about the solid build, and it has more weight to it then you would think, but it suggest a good build.

I have a quick 1 minute youtube vid of me using it after rooting it.

If anyone had questions feel free to ask. I don't have all the answers but XDA does so check there also.

If the vid link has to be removed please do so, and just check for "Nook Color Rooted" - romeyp at youtube.

I understand that there's a VLC app for the marketplace.  Have you tried it, assuming the rumor is correct?  VLC works a treat on my frighteningly outdated Windows XP laptop (which is probably less powerful than the Nook Color, honestly), and handles just about every format, video or audio, that I throw at it.  Would be interesting to see how it would work on this.

I'm also vaguely curious about the Cruz Reader, mostly since it's half the price of the Nook Color.  If VLC can be used on these things to play FLAC and AVI files, I'll actually consider one.  I did briefly look at a Nook Color at Best Buy and thought it was gorgeous, and I understand that recent and/or upcoming firmware updates improve performance greatly from stock, so I'm eager to see where this thing goes.

The VLC player that is available in the market if for remote controlling VLC on your PC, not for playing media on your Android device.

I was a long time Pocket PC user and used VLC for all of my media needs then.

I still currently use it as my main video viewer on my PC.

I hope they are able to get the full VLC media player working on Android because it really is the "Do All" media player.

Here you go.

Excuse the poor picture quality. It's not easy to hold your camera phone, use the device, and talk at the same time, but I'll get better at it as I do more reviews.

Next time I'll use a tripod.

The name of the launcher is Zeam.

That clock is part of Beatiful Weather widget. So it comes with the weather and can be skinned in any manner that you choose.

Yes that is it.

I purchased them on my phone and was able to install them on my nook too. I think it cost $2.99, but worth it.

Beautiful widgets, and you will also need BW Animation Package which contains the weather animations.

Install the Zeam launcher first then touch an open space on the home screen and choose add item then widget, then Beautiful Home Weather.

After you chose it launch it then click the menu icon and set, then configure. From there you can set up how you want the clock and weather to look.

Ask all the questions you want. I'll answer them when I check this post in the morning.
