Skipping sound from Airport express optical output

My airport express is hooked up via optical to my stereo system. When i skip to the next song or close itunes, it makes this popping/crackling sound as if the optical transmission is being abruptly cut off. 

 

However when i hook my macbook pro optically direct to my stereo, i don't have this problem. So i think it's something wrong with my airport express.

 

 

has anyone had similar problems?

I have this exact problem with an airport express and a Peachtree Musicbox.

 

Like you, I verified that it isn't the musibox's fault with other sources.

 

FFing airport express.

 

I'm considering USB-over-cat5 from my music server (mac mini) to the amp, problem is I can't find a good way to get the mac mini to output system audio to two devices (pathetic) or replicate the USB audio stream.
