Or are there any better alternatives? I could go up to $50 and maybe just a bit more.

If you can spend up to 50USD go with these http://www.buy.com/prod/edifier-r1200-multimedia-speaker-system-2-0-channel-16w-rms-wood/q/loc/111/209762436.html . They're decent for the price.

I've seen that, but is it worth the $30 increase? I'm trying to spend as little as possible. Really on a tight budget here :(

Go for some used m-audio monitors. Extremely neutral and beautiful mids.

If Logitech still made the X-230s, I'd recommend those. For the price, they were hard to beat. Their current offerings don't seem to measure up.

Not sure if the OP will be able to find M-Audios for $50 shipped.

At least the Edifiers look nice.

Can't find them for around my budget price.

They're discontinued, but I found one listing on eBay.

How good are they compared to the Edifier R1200?

I had the X-530 which is the 5.1 version of X-230, I say compared to the R1200, the latter won hands out for music especially easy listening music like jazz, instrumental, new age, orchestra... If you want bass for your hip hop, rap, trance and electronic music without the need for much details and such the X-230 might do better to make you feel the music. The R1200 is around the league of the Creative T20 which is double in price.

I saw that but wasn't going to recommend it because they're used and he's asking more than the MSRP. When I bought a set for my parents, they were something like $35 shipped. That was a pretty good deal, though. It's up to you.

I'm not familiar with the Edifiers, but they will probably be lighter in terms of bass (no subwoofer), with more treble (the X-230s are on the darker side of neutral).

I guess I'm gonna pull the trigger on that Edifier :D

Thanks  a lot everyone.

No problem :)

I just realized that at low volumes, the sound becomes imbalanced. The right speaker is much louder than the left speaker. Is this normal?

Kind of, most speakers will have channel inbalance its to do with the resistors in the light and right channels not having the exact same amount of resistance, in more expensive speakers where better parts are used the resistors will be better matched and the inbalance won't be as much and probley not audioable.

Sounds like the Dayton652 would be a perfect fit for you. They're dirt cheap and apparently have amazing quality for the price. Heres a link to an article about them on audiophiliac: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-20005175-47.html?tag=mncol;txt

Sorry, I bought Edifier R1200 already. Thx for the suggestion though, will definitely look into that in the future.
