Next project after Cmoy - Analog Metric Tube Kit or Beta22

Well, It's now a couple of months and a couple Cmoys built and im longing for a more detailed build project and a better, desktop amp.

 

My budjet is not too strong, being a last year art student working about almost full time for a newspaper doing layout / photography. I've been looking at the Beta22 + Sigma22 which would be about 200e shipped to Finland. Im also interested in a tube project, and I came across Analog Metric shop on ebay, they're selling this 5687 tube based kit for 70$ and with a toroidal power supply thats around 100e shipped to Finland.

 

So the tube would be a lot cheaper, I like the tube thing, my guitar amp is one of those, nice, mellow, round sound. Any con's on this, soundwise compared to the Beta22?

have you looked at the Bottlehead Crack amp? Granted it's double plus what the analogmetric kit is but it's complete with chassis, transformer, tubes, the whole shebang.

I don't think that is an accurate estimate of cost for the B22+S22. A 3 channel B22 + S22 is $4-500 (US) in PCB/parts alone, not counting any case work or connectors. Cases, panels, and connectors can add several hundred more on top of that. If you are concerned about budget I think the B22 is not the way to go for now.

I doubt you could build any B22 + S22 with that budget. Even the 'simplest' configuration (passive ground, in Hammond cases, RK27) is not possible.

 

For that budget, your best bet is the MiniMax. The Crack is surely nice but it won't be as easily to assemble as the MiniMax which is already carefully engineered.

Another good first step is a CK2III, that should cost you less than $200 to build, or the Soha II, at around $250 (hybrid).

 

If you want to try a very cheap but good sounding hybrid, check out this thread on the Super Simple 6DJ8 head amp:

The boards show up on ebay regularly, or you can buy the kits or boards here:

You could probably build one for less than $150 including the case..

Another option is "The Wire", a new amp that opc over at diyaudio has designed.  It would be a super simple build and could give you pretty amazing performance for the price,  from what I can see..
