I turned on my computer today, found that itunes gave me an ALAC copy of the album "resurection through carnage" upon a/b inspection, they sound better, and the files are larger, so its not a computer bug, does anyone know what the hell is going on?

Yeah, this. When did Apple use anything but AAC and mp3?

I am confused. Do you mean buying music from the itunes store is in ALAC or you didn't know that itunes could rip in ALAC?

It didn't occur to me that that's what he may have meant. That would make more sense.

These files got there without me doing anything, just about 90% of the songs in a couple of bloodbath albums, four songs from amon amarth and two cage the elephant songs, so now im curious if this was a completely random event or if people are getting ALAC copies of files they originally downloaded.

yes i have rather "pedestrian" taste in music.

Second click on the files or whatever, then select "Get Info", there it should say whether or not it is lossless.  Also says under the Kind column if you haven't removed it when looking at all your music collectively.

Yeah. I looked at kind. Its lossless, its bigger, and it sounds better. Which is why im so confused, i thought itunes ONLY had 256 AAC available for download now.

Sounds like a slight change for the better.

That is really interesting. I know they have built a gigantic data center for content delivery. Perhaps they are testing for delivery of ALAC, so far there is no official announcement, but it is possible that is the next "feature" for their annual September iTunes announcement. Are the songs you are downloading popular songs?

They are probably trying to double-dip from their loyal customers. They did the same thing when they removed DRM from tracks sold on the iTunes store. Instead of upgrading all of the tracks people initially bought with DRM, Apple made it so that they would have to repurchase those same tracks if they wanted to move their files around.

By making ALAC available, they are hoping those customers who want better quality than what was previously offered will rebuy their favorite tracks in lossless format. I have tons of Apple computers and gear but I hate how the company treats its customers.

Agreed. Before I got into Hi-Fi and really caring about quality, I was buying from AmazonMP3. 256kbps mp3's with NO DRM.

Well now this is an interesting development.  Doesn't really help me out, though.  I already ripped all of my stuff to FLAC and I despise iTunes.  If it weren't for my numerous iPods I could be totally rid of it.
