Why audioengine are so popular when there is so many other brands ?

Seem to me they are overrated, at the same price you can get active speakers and not powered passive speaker like audioengine do that offer no real benefits, or even fullrange speakers with t-amp.

Is this just because they fill the empty market of cheap auto-powered hifi speakers and are fashion ?

So what's the alternative for $349?

Mackie MR5 and M-Audio BX5a Deluxe to name a couple. Tannoy Reveal 501a also seem to be garnering positive reviews.

Marketing, probably. Plus they look shiny.

I don't know about now, but up until last year, they had a consistent problem with humming heard in the circuit with both the 2's and 5's. They are real pretty, but for the money, I went with the Amphion Ion L's and then the passive Harbeth PSE3SR's. That's entering the big leagues.
