K702 Rewire

After owning the K702 for over three month and comparing them a lot side-by-side against K701, I got the urge to mod the K702 to make them sound a bit better.

I saw in a thread how castigar modded his K702 by replacing the 3pin male mini xlr in the phones with a 4pin one, which allows for balanced operation and more proper wiring (much like the K701's wiring).

So I ordered some connectors and wires today. The plan is to first build an after-market cable for the current 3pin mini xlr using mogami 2534, then hear how that sounds. After that I'll try the more serious mod (like castigar's) which is replacing the male mini xlr with a 4pin one and re-wiring internally for balanced operation instead of stock SE (3wires), for this mod I will use Cardas 4x24awg wire.

Hope that I'll remember to take pics while doing the second mod.

I am ready to order spare parts from Harman/AKG in case I mess up some parts in the process biggrin.gif

Regardless I am planning also to replace the pads on the K702 with K701 pads. K701 pads are thinner than K702, the fact that they're thinner puts the phones closer to the ears. This makes more bass and overall more volume because of the shorter distance between ear and phone.

Well I made the basic replacement cable two days ago.

The wire I used is mogami 2534, terminated with neutrik 1/4" TRS phone plug and a switchcraft all-metal (rfi shielded silver color) 3pin mini-xlr female.I used 2 conductors for the neutral/ground, connected the shield only @ the source side to neautral/ground.

One thing I'm pretty sure about is that it sounds less bright than the stock cable does, and the bass has more authority & fullness to it compared to the stock cable. Overall I'm very satisfied with the new cable so far.
