And I'm tempted to update emCORE because of them, and to try the latest official RockBox release because of you!

Is it different than alrodan's  build 130217?

No doubt, the ui is faster responding with less lag since upgrading emcore. Could be alrodan's build is responsible but i know before i upgraded emcore, running 130217,  it was running sluggish as it had always been.

So, you guys recommend the latest r868 emCORE version, yes? Anything I should be warned about before upgrading? I never updated emCORE before (I'm using the official release since the first time I turned on my iPod Classic, straight out of the box)... redface.gif

^ what i did was follow the install instructions in page 1, i didn't encounter any issues and they are accurate. don't forget to back-up your device's contents - just to be on the safe side.

I wanted to thank the members who post on this thread. The posts convinced me to try Rockbox.  I Rockboxed my old I iPod 5.5G that I had not used in 4 years. The headphone port was broken and I never fixed it.  2 iPods and 2 iPhones I learned to use the line out to my fiio 11.

The iPod 5.5G is now my main portable audio source.  I can now play high res audio and it sounds  significantly better in all formats.

I initially thought that this was going to be too complicated, but frankly it is as easy as downloading and transferring a file.  I have no problems going back and forth between iTunes and Rockbox to load and off load files.  FLAC sounds great on this iPod.

Same here.  Just sent my 5.5G to Rapid Repair for a new 120gb drive, extended life battery, and new back.  Rockboxed and transferred some Hi-rez and much of my FLAC library.  This iPod sounded good before and now is spectacular!  I did Rockbox my 6G Classic but never got it to work well with MM and the sound just didn't meet my expectations.  The 5.5G Rockboxed is truly magnificent.....  :)

FWIW loading the db to RAM and using music bee to organize my musi does wonders for the rockbox, also makes it snappier and faster than without loading to RAM

reporting some weird issues i encountered with the current alrodan build, i'm not sure if it only affects the current build or is also present on previous builds...

- while in WPS, i was skipping tracks at a more than usual pace, then my screen just went all white, music still playing but i now can't do anything. i had to reboot, to fix the issue

- while music was playing in the background, i tried to change themes. after the new theme was loaded, the pitch suddenly went haywire, it's like it was playing 3-4 times the usual pitch. had to reboot again to fix the issue.

Not sure about the white screen issue but the pitch glitch when changing themes seems to be a Rockbox issue. It doesn't always happen and it depends in part on the complexity of the theme that you are loading. The best approach is to pause music, change theme, restart music.

i get this error after loading the UBI file (r867 from here: http://builds.freemyipod.org/). when i try to boot rockbox to install the “rockbox-ipodclassic.zip” file i get this error.

i'm also using an iFlash MKII adapter w/ an SDXC card.  could this be the problem?

i got this error too. mine is the original ipod classic 6th. no matter i am using r868, r859 or even r867, i will get this msg too. Is it because of my harddisk is the problem?

Rockbox is still working and sounding great.  If you have an iPod 5.5G or if you buy one off of eBay for $70-100 and Rockbox, it is like owning a high end portable player. The 5.5 is a stable port and relatively simple to transform, plus the Wolfson chip in the 5.5 is arguably one of the better sounding iPod chips.

One of my concerns with transforming the firmware was use of iTunes with the Rockbox.  You can swap back and forth easily between iTunes and Rockbox.  You can put music or off on iTunes and load on the iPod then update Rockbox via settings thru the database.

24/44 is no problem now.

My only question at this point is what to do with anything above that (ex. 24/96)?  Transforming this to mp3 320 is what I've done so far.

Its definitely worth it specially if you have already a collection of flac files and (it sound different i dont know how to say it since im also new at this but the sound quality is better than using the normal OS) installation is easy if you follow the instruction carefully , im on the same boat like you 2 days ago before i got my ipod (not an apple fan but need a huge space) and having trouble playing my flac files so i installed this and boom im totally loving it .. unistall is also easy you just need plug it on itunes and restore
