This is my first post here. I'm very new to this hobby and looking for some advice on an inexpensive, portable DAC/HP Amp. My current setup is centered around a Sound Blaster Extigy. I use it as a pre-amp/DAC fed via USB from my PC, TOSLINK from my Sony CD changer, coaxial from my cable box and line level from my Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable/Audio Technica phone pre-amp. In addition to listening with headphones, I use it to drive a set of Logitech Z-2300 computer speakers and the amp section of an Insignia stereo receiver powering Polk Monitor 30 bookshelf speakers. I've been pleased with the Extigy but after recently listening to my HD-428's through a friend's Maverick Audio D1/A1 combo, I've become increasing unhappy with the negative effects of the Extigy's forced 48khz sample rate conversion and weak headphone output. Ideally I would just buy a D1 and A1, but unfortunately I'm a newlywed on a working musician's budget. I love what I do but I don't do it for the money. Until I can afford the D1 and eventually the A1, I would like to buy a portable DAC/HP amp that I can later use with my laptop as a portable rig. I've narrowed my choices to the NuForce Icon uDAC-2 and Icon Mobile. I like the fact the the uDAC-2 has a line level output for my speakers and a digital input, but my main purpose for this purchase is for headphone listening from my PC. My question to those who have heard both is if the uDAC-2 sounds $50 better. I know $50 doesn't seem like much money to most, but I have a hard time spending it if there's no performance benefit. I'm also open to suggestions of another product in a similar price range. Any input is greatly appreciated.
