How do you remove ipod dock connector pins??

So I'm making an iphone LOD, but when I was preparing to solder my wires to the dock connector pins, I couldn't seem to remove the excess pins...

 

I tried simply pulling them straight out with needle-nose pliers, but after a while I began to mutilate the pin rather than removing it tongue.gif

So then i tried pushing forward and pulling, along with pulling backwards. I still cannot seem to do anything other the bend the little suckers all over the place...

 

What is the proper "technique" for pulling them out???

 

As always, any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

I haven't done one for a few years, but I recall that I used a small pair of cutters and grabbed the pin near the base and then pushed down on the grips of the cutters using the connector as pivot to move the pin out.
