Can X-Fi handle higher end headphones?

Hi there I have an X-Fi SB0770 http://www.creative.com/oem/resources/SoundCards/SB077x.pdf

Was wondering what kind of capabilites this sound card has in terms of upgrading to a stronger pair of headphones...

(Currently on Creative Fatal1ty Mark IIs).

Could this sound card handle Beyerdynamic DT770/880 250ohm/80ohm or similar headphones for example? If so which one could it handle best? Keeping in mind I like to have things relatively loud, as in, I don't want to have to turn everything up full to get a nice full sound.

Anyway let me know what you guys think of the capabilites of this sound card,

Many thanks

The card doesn't even have a dedicated amplifier so you won't be getting what those headphones can fully offer. From those, the Beyer's DT770 (80ohm) should be the easiest.

I think you should buy a DAC/AMP combo

Thanks guys,

What amp or dac/amp combo would power the beyer 770s decently? For the 'best' price of course, wasn't intending to buy one in the first place...

These guys are the main dealers here in the UK http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/

(or alternatively http://www.thomann.de/gb/index.html)

--Oh and also, I don't know what an amp really is, does it act as an independent sound card? Will it mean that my sound card becomes obsolete or something?--

The DAC will act as a sound card/digital output, and the amp will drive your high impedance headphones.

You can still use your onboard audio simultaneously. (eg. i have winamp/foobar set to output to my dac, while windows sounds to my onboard audio to speakers)

I have to argue, I have the Creative I-Trigue 2200 (6 year old speakers) and they are very good quality for the price and from a non-audiophile standpoint, imo. They still look brand new too. Lack a LOT of bass, but they're tweaters so obviously.

Any suggestions for an amp for the beyerDT770-80 pros?

Edit - I've put this question in a different thread.

Thanks for letting me know that I'll need an amp
