Is the Chaintech AV-710 better than the Realtek ALC888?

As far as I know the ALC888 is pretty decent for an on-board sound source. The digital outputs and the quality Wolfson DACs for the 7/8 channels aside would the AV-710 be an actual upgrade compared to the ALC888?

For 2 channel audio, the AV-710 is easily better than the ALC888, if you set it up right and use the 7/8 output

But that output is straight from the dac, so not intented to be connected straight to headphones

Digital output should be identical for both cards

I don't care/need digital output. And I know that the 7/8 channels use the quality Wolfson DACs and that if those are used the AV-710 easily beats any on-board audio card and many low-to-mid end desecrete cards.

I meant if we forgot about their existence for a moment. What about the rest of the channels? As far as I know they utilise the VT1616. Is that better, roughly the same or worse than the ALC888.

Why is the Chaintech still better?  I bought that card like 5 years ago for $20.

Is there an equivalent?

The VT1616 is pretty terrible, so if you are using it for more than stereo, i would stick with onboard. AFAIK you cannot use surround sound analogue out with the front output coming from the 7/8 port :(

But you can use more than one sound card, and switch between them in windows

Thanks. That's what I needed.
