Found my *almost* perfect audio player: XMPlay

Thread Starter

I have recently been trying all kinds of media players. I am coming from Winamp, which I have loved for over 10 years. I wanted something that looked like Winamp, had similar skins, and is just a player and playlist. I don't want it to organize my music or any extra stuff. I basically just wanted a Winamp 2.x with better WASAPI as the plug-in for winamp is garbage.

I believe XMPlay fits the bill. The sound quality to me seems excellent - as good as Foobar2000 which I tried to use but it just wasn't doing it for me. I also like that XMPlay has no installer and is small and bloat free. All I had to do was find a decent skin, download the FLAC and WASAPI dlls, and I am good to go!

Anyway, if anyone loved Winamp and is looking for something as similar as possible, this is the closest I've found. I think it is unbelievable Winamp was allowed to die instead of just making an official WASAPI plug-in.

The only complaint I have is there are few skins and that the playlist editor does not "snap" to the bottom of the controls like in Winamp. However, as it is still in development, I have high hopes.

I use XMPlay too. Perfect sound, solid as a rock, no muss, no fuss.

Peace XMPlay user convert. dt880smile.png  Skins aren't perfect, but there's enough out there for everyone to generally find something they like.  Otherwise it can't be beat.

yeah, xmplay's great...it lacks some of the features found in uLilith but it's still a good player.

In contrast I found XMplay to be better than lilith in every aspect, except maybe vst plugin support which I don't use.

yeah:

-the VST plugins support lacks(useful for crossfeed plugins on headphones), and no automatic latency compensation for linear phase EQ plugins

-you can set hotkeys for volume control, but you cannot choose the steps size...it's 5% and it's not negotiable. My Griffin PowerMate is too sensitive to use 5%

-it lacks one of the features I like the most in uLilith, the "open current folder in uLilith" right-click option on all audio files...no need to create .m3u files anymore, I love it!

-you're forced to choose a fixed sample rate for ASIO

-a few others things I forgot about

my crossfeed plugin (head-fit) works fine with XMPlay

right-clicking on files or playlists gives me a menu saying, "play with . . ." and XMPlay is an option (along with my other players)

as for ASIO, I dropped it after wasapi just like VHS is history now there's DVDs,  =^)

Wow.  At first I thought the OP was on crack and that the sound wasn't any better than winamp.  But, after some minor adjustments in XM i cannot get winamp to sound as tight as XM.  Then again the equalizer has some different numbers but still I'm digging it.  I have not removed winamp but can you enqueue files with XM as you can with winamp?  I guess I could look into editing the right-click menu...

Does this really sound any better than Foobar with WASAPI?

I tried it and didn't really think so although it sounded very good for sure.   But for me the UI of Foobar is better, especially the way I have it set up and customized to my liking.  No doubt my opinion is influenced a lot by my familiarity with Foobar whereas XM seems very unfamiliar and harder to use (for me).  So I expect I'll continue to use Foobar.  It just does everything I need very effortlessly as well as sounding great.

I'd have to agree with Harp, although I'm the opposite.  I like Xm but it is not very customizable.  The text is very small and i cant make it bigger for the life of me.  Some other nuances.  I like foobar but I am all for the simplistic approach.

all the audio players seem to sound different for some reason, and as much as I can't stand how foobar sounds...XMP sounds just like uLilith as far as I can tell. Using untouched lossless audio at least.

@Justin: good for you, this dongle sounds fantastic...USB needs some drastic filtering to sound good IME.

In theory, if the audio player can play the file properly, then none should sound any different than others unless you have some plugins added.  I've used both foobar and XM extensively, and with no plugins enabled (meaning no equalizer, limiters or anything) they sound exactly the same, as they should be.  If you're turning on the audio "enhancers" than yeah, they will sound different because they aren't built the same way.  It depends on what you're looking for.  Going from Winamp to XM and saying there's a huge difference probably means some enhancement is in play. wink_face.gif

My two acorns here, despite being an XMplay user.

Unfortunately my ears disagree with that theory for whatever reason it may be. :(

1's are 1' and 0's are 0's, everyone knows that: toslink in foobar sounds the same as coax in XMP/uLilith...in theory[:trofub]

Does it support a library? If so, how good is the library management?
