R10 owners: Something I've always wondered...

I've been an R10s owner for some time.  But I have never been satisfied with one particular aspect of them.  Which is the correct way to store these headphones:

Fat Side out or Thin Side Out?

There are benefits and problems with both ways:

Fat Side Out:

Headphones look more flush against the interior as if it were designed for this more so.  The cable however (the rubber tips which meet the headphone get entirely stressed out and bent every time you close the box and I'm afraid of the long term issues packing this can do.

Thin Side Out:

Headphones appear sligjhtly odd in the way the fit.  The headphones put a bit of pressure on the interior of the box and cause minor indentations in the box.  However the able fits pefectly within the indentation that was made for it.

Which is the correct way?

I'd love to know the answer to this question as well!

Thin side out. I would avoid any pressure on the cable connections.

Thanks, I'm still not sure though.  Are you an owner?

Any other owners want to chime in?  If you search the R10 on google  and you look at pictures of them in their box, you'll much more often see them fat side out.

Thats how I do it.

Fat side out crushes the cable when you cloose the lid.

Hi,

When I first received my R10s - they were packed fat-side out.

Later, I noticed that the cable is stressed in that position -- so I switched to the fat-side in approach.

I think it is shipped with fat-side out, though it crushes the cables.  I still store my fat-side out till this day.  I believe the silk-wrap sleeve provides plenty of protection to the wire themselves.

Hey Purk,

What makes you believe that it is shipped out this way.  Others have told me this too, but no one has yet confirmed buying a new pair and seeing it for themselves.

One thing which has me concernedis the way in which the headband design seems to taper more to being packed thin side out despite the fact that the ear cups appear more well-suited to fat side out.  Someone has stated that the wood will be damaged over time packing them in thin side out due to the fact that the cups will never hit the bottom and the wood will be cramp and pressured for years.

If there is someone who has bought a pair fresh from the box and has seen the actual way Sony intended to pack this, maybe the mystery will be solved for me.  It seems amazing to me that the design shows no defentiive way of packing.  It doesn't make sense that the cable should be crushed for years of storage.  It also doesn't make sense that with the ear cups more flush and protected the cable would be compromised.

Any retailer who has sold a bunch of these new from the factory, want to chime in?

Hi David,

I received mine new in 1999 direct from Japan.

The R10 was supplied stored fat-side out.

I'm going with that, since I took that picture ;-) I don't have the R10s anymore but that was indeed how I had em stored, the other way just seemed really awkward. Deadneddz has my pair now so he'll probably have better insight than I do.

i dont actually store them in the box at all. its not a great box for storage. I have them on a special headphone stand covered. the box is stored separately.
