Hifi Man 601 or Sflo 2?

I was wondering which player would be better for my needs. I will be using this at the gym alot which I think both are capable of. Also I will be using it with etymotic er4p headphones and no portable amp. So I guess I am wondering which sounds better and if the higher price on the HM601 is worth it.

Thanks in advance for any info...

Sflo has the slightly edge in frequency range specially in the treble. The sound is more liner all-round but not as much as the Touch 4g. They're not as powerful but work slightly better in lower volume levels.

The 601 is really colored, but very unique sounding. The bass has really nice texture, mids are bought and given a sweet coloration while the treble is rolled off which in turn makes it less fatiguing.

Battery life is a bit less on the 601 and while the 601 is bulkier, it's actually lighter than the SFlo2.

Thanks so much for the quick response... do you think the etymotic er4p's would sound good in both of them. I recall reading somewhere that certain headphones don't sound good on certain players.

Yes, the 602 does better with brighter sources and the Sflo2 with warm ones, generally speaking. The 602 will be a better pairing for the Etys, but i'll recommend a p-to-s adapter for better sq. Haven't heard the pairing myself, but DJGeorge has reported it to be a good pairing and it makes sense considering similar impressions from others.

Thanks again for getting back to me. Unfortunately I cannot afford the 602 at this time I'm not sure if you meant the 601 would sound better with the earphones. Also I am looking into getting that adapter.

Sorry when I said 602 I actually meant both 601/602 as they're almost identical in sound as the differences are small. 602 is only recommended if you want the DAC and more memory, but it looks like the 601 will be better considering the budget (they're currently in a bundle special).

Yes since the ER4s are considered bright, the 601/602 (almost identical in sound) are the better pairing imo. 601 is much more affordable, but if they're intended for solely gym use i'll suggest clip+/hippo gumstick since the 601 is bulky.

ER4P to my ears 'needs' the 60x signature.  ER4S could go either way though the 60x is better than the Sflo2 IMO unless you favor a more neutral treble at the top end.

Agree w/ the Gumstick for the ER4P/S gym use.  Use a lanyard around neck unless you run.
